“Throughout antiquity, Venus, goddess of love, was the most famous subject for female nudes. Judged the most beautiful of all deities, Venus, according to poets, was born from the sea foam and floated to shore on a scallop shell moved by gentle breezes. In this famous pose, Venus appears with the drapery of her mantle knotted in place and arranging her hair with upraised arms.
Like so many works from antiquity, this statue exists in a damaged state without head or arms. Stylistic differences suggest that the drapery and torso may have belonged to different statues. Creating composite antiquities was common in earlier times. Despite the losses, these fragments suggest the sensual quality and perfection of form attributed to the goddess of love.”
