Uther’s Mourning
When Uther learns of Cornwall’s death Wace says he “assumed the appearance of a mourner, but very few of his men believed him” (97). When I first read this scene I read it as one of the only times we see written that Uther might not have had unconditional support and love from his followers. That his men might be questioning his authority.
However, when I reread it I also saw it as maybe meaning that his men might be in on it with him. That they don’t believe his mourning because they knew he wanted Igerna so they see this as a win and their king as just “playing” sad in order to keep up appearances but they know better since they fought Cornwall under his orders.
