Sohail Gate, Qila Rohtas
A balcony on the one of the 12 gates of the famous Rohtas Fort. Reminiscent of the carvings decorating some Hindu temples, this design is most likely because of the skilled Hindu artisans employed in the construction of this fort.
Sohail Gate, Rohtas Fort
The fort was first ruled by Sher Shah Suri, who had it constructed in 1541 after defeating the Mughal Emperor Humayun. Humayun fled to Iran and the Mughal empire crumbled.
Sher Shah placed the fort strategically within Ghakkar territory, since they were loyal to the Mughals. He ruled for 5-6 years until he was killed in battle and Humayun returned with Iranian reinforcements, easily conquering Sher Shah’s sons who were engaged in infighting. The fort was the ruled by the Mughals who rebuilt their dynasty. They eventually lost the fort to the Sikhs who ruled it for about 30 years until the British took it over.
