The Rogue Hack Lab is home to Undiscovered Game Studios, a group of area high school students collaborating on the development of their very own video game. They're not just talking about it; they're actually doing it. They're making rather than just consuming.
This is another example of how the Rogue Hack Lab encourages adaptive learning (learning on-the-fly). As these young hackers/makers run into the many inevitable challenges along the way, it becomes obvious what skills they need to learn in order to accomplish the objectives. That gives them motivation to learn the skills.
Here is a sample of some of the tools and skills I've seen them picking up along the way:
goal setting and prioritizing tasks
sound recording and audio production
learning how to use digital tools to enhance or tweak that music to fit the atmosphere of the game
digital art and related software
Over the summer, I expect they'll keep improving and continuing to develop and hone their skills.
The skills they learn here will be invaluable in both the short term and the long term. I expect the dedication of these individuals will pay off in terms of additional learning and career opportunities, and possibly even the formation of a serious start-up company in the future.
