Hey so if I start writing fic with Rodrigo and throwing Spanish in there y’all aren’t gonna make fun of me or think that I’m being a weird white bitch about it right 😭🥺 I wanna learn and I used him to explore me being separated from my own culture before so this is just a natural next step right yes okay
Rodrigo : Concieto de Arunjuez, on the turntable this morning
I don’t think I posted this here yet but I found faces for Rodrigo’s mothers :) Elena is on top and Carina is on the bottom
Rodrigo comes out the womb looking like Elena just with Carina’s eyes and Carina is Pissed “9 months in the womb and he looks like his stupid Mamá” meme
I may end up making an entire academic paper on this fr but when I’m thinking about my OCs and their gender/sexual identity it really is fascinating how the language they would use to identify themselves changes based on their experiences — and how the language wouldn’t perfectly line up with how we define identity
Because from existing in a world where gender/sexual exploration is largely understood, accepted, and encouraged, the labels we use likely wouldn’t even exist for them
But then once I put them into like “modern aus” where they’re in our world, the language exists because it has to
One of my favorite examples of this is Meredith, who in her normal canon, just identifies as a woman, but “woman” doesn’t mean what it does to us, because she was raised in a society where the only thing that mattered was lineage, not gender, everyone could do every role despite their identity
But in Our world, Meredith would likely identify as transmasc and/or butch because she’d feel the need growing up to push against the constraints that being a “woman” looks like, taking some kind of low dosage T but not identifying as a “man”
Similarly, Rodrigo would be largely unlabeled in his canon, maybe call himself gay if that was brought up to him, but he just doesn’t care enough to think about it further — he was raised by lesbians and again the society he was born in didn’t place different meanings on same-sex or otherwise queer couples
Then in our world his identity is heavily politicized and him identifying as queer means so much more, especially when it comes to how he interacts with the history of being brown and queer in Florida/NYC (depending on the au lmao)
This post brought to you by me thinking about what the hell I’m going to do for the pride event tomorrow
