⁣ Canon Powershot SX730 HS ⁣ Taken on 26/10/2019.⁣ ⁣ Perched on top of a hill, the Castle of Roddi majestically overlooks the Tanaro Valley—and yet all too often overlooked by tourists.⁣ ⁣ As a matter of fact, of all the castles scattered around the Langhe, the one in Roddi is often said to be the most interesting from a historical and architectural perspective.⁣ ⁣ Originally an 11th-century fort, the castle we see today probably dates back to the late 14th and early 15th centuries and was the work of the powerful Falletti family, who also owned the castles of Barolo and Serralunga d'Alba, before passing to the Mirandola family in the 17th century.⁣ ⁣ The castle has a unique architectural design in that the two cylindrical towers look quite different from each other: one is lower and bulkier while the other is higher and more slender. In fact, the taller tower acted as a 'Dongione' ('Keep'), used as a refuge of last resort should the rest of the castle fall to an adversary.⁣ ⁣ What surprised me most about the Castle of Roddi was the numerous decorations, wooden coffered ceilings and beautiful historic kitchens, with their Gothic edges dating back to the 16th century. It wasn't that long ago that the frescoes had been carefully restored, so I felt lucky to see them in such pristine condition.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ You can get to Roddi by bus from Alba with 'BusCompany'.
