Feel free to delete this if you're done with this topic but how the fuck does transphobic galra even make sense when they're already barely sexually dimorphic in a way humans would recognize. I kinda assumed they weren't binary, since we have at least one example of non binary pronoun use (I think?). Also as medically advanced as they are transition would be super easy to the point that if passing is somehow an issue for them it'd probably be almost instant...? Idk I have Thoughts and Opinions.
oh no, I'm not at all done with this topic. I have Strong Opinions™ about aliens and gender, and the Galra in particular because they're my favorites. I'm working on a write-up of my headcanon for the way they conceptualize gender, if you're interested in that, but I'll answer this first because I have a whole rant.
I honestly don't think they are sexually dimorphic--some of the feminine ones have the dorito body type, and plenty of masculine ones are long and slender, and we can't gauge whether or not there's boobs because breastplates add enough bulk that you genuinely can't tell if someone has breasts or not--and I don't remember whether or not flashback!Krolia had them, but assuming Galra are mammaloid, bear live young, and produce milk, it's likelier a Galra would develop temporary breasts for easier nursing the way most nonhuman mammals on Earth do. the only real difference I've noted that people cite is lipstick on some of the femme Galra, and some of them have secondary lash flicks on the bottom of the outside of the eye, but aside from that there's functionally no difference between masc and femme Galra.
I also assume they aren't binary--pronoun use is no indication of gender, we're almost certainly getting a translated version of what they're saying anyway so who knows what pronouns they're actually using, and a friend of mine has made a pretty good case for they/them Kolivan. you're absolutely right, if there is a need to transition medically, they're advanced enough that it would be a quick change. and anyway, it's statistically unlikely that aliens would have a binary gender system at all, much less the same one we have, and since the Alteans seem to have a similar binary to the human one the odds of three distinct species having the same binary is slim to none.
fortunately (or unfortunately), the only people I've seen use that trope are Paladin fans writing issue fics--that is, fics where the focus is specifically on one of the Paladins being trans in space and dealing with that--and it's only to make the Galra look more evil by being bigoted which is ridiculous because ???? they're already the antagonists and them caring about aliens' genders is fucking stupid anyway but y'know, I don't truck with people who focus mostly on the Paladins, so I don't have to see it often. which is a good thing, because I would be pissed instead of just mildly annoyed if it was Galra fans doing it.
so yeah. I'm absolutely with you on this. transphobic Galra is just...ridiculous.
