Rockhaven: haunted by “the ladies” ~ in the nicest of ways!

Joyfully, I picked up an assignment to write about the fate of La Crescenta’s historic, famed Rockhaven Sanitarium. This wonderfully-edited piece resulted in last week’s Crescenta Valley Weekly: Future Development of Rockhaven in Doubt

National Motto: “Delkhiin zürkh setgel” (Heart of the Earth)

One of the oldest nations in Eslaria, Rockhaven has long been considered a hub of wealth, culture, and power. Its many great cities tower above the country’s forested landscape, standing as testament to its long legacy. It sits on the eastern coast of Eteriske, bordered by Estrella to the west, Franztis to the north, and Keehaag to the northeast.

Rockhaven’s flag is a tricolor of red, black and light blue, with a white wreath in the center of it. The colors actually stand for the Three Towers of Guang, a very old trio of structures in the capital that date back to the country’s founding. (Pictured below.) They’re considered one of the greatest national symbols of Rockhaven. The colors are in reference to their names: Fire, Sky, and Night. The white wreath is meant to be woven out of daisy flowers, the national plant, a symbol of peace and prosperity.

Once a simple fishing village at the confluence of the Knos and Stasae Rivers, the nation’s capital city of Guang has grown over the ages into the glittering economic hub that it is today. The mix of old and new in the city is quite remarkable to behold - towering glass skyscrapers give way to blocks of old, traditional housing or temples within just a few minutes’ walk. Due to its position, it has always been a mecca for trade, sending goods downriver to the port of Aitadalos or inland along the many roads that crisscross the land starting from it. It’s one of the largest and wealthiest cities in Eslaria, boasting a population of nearly 18 million.

The rocky eastern coast of the nation is what gave it its name. The high cliffs and peaks gave protection to the people of Rockhaven in the early ages, when pirates were still a major issue. In recent years, it’s become quite the tourist destination because of its stunning natural beauty - but visitors are warned to not go swimming in the ocean, as one of Eslaria’s largest populations of sharks lives off this portion of the coast.
