In Los Angeles, the Elks hosted many Juneteenth picnics, including a number at the Selig Zoo, next to Lincoln Park. Advertisement from the California Eagle (1933).

June 16, 1933: The old Sixth Street Bridge was dedicated 93 years ago today (and demolished in 2016).

When the new Sixth Street Viaduct opened in 2022, I wrote a PBS SoCal article about the Bureau of Engineering photos that documented the 1930s construction of that beautiful bridge.
June 3, 1943: The Zoot Suit Riots escalate as mobs of sailors leave Chavez Ravine's Naval Armory in search of zoot suiters.
Developed by muralist Arturo Gonzales and East Side of the River, Maywood's Sleepy Lagoon mural honors the Zoot Suit culture in Los Angeles. The mural pays tribute to all those affected by what happened at Sleepy Lagoon in 1942 and the violence that erupted the following year.
