Dating the best bareback rider in rodeo isn’t always easy. Between his rodeo schedule and my eventing calendar, we’re constantly chasing each other across the country.
But when Rocker comes to one of my horse shows instead of a rodeo, it’s my favorite version of him. No one knows him as the World Champion Bareback Rider. Here, he’s just Rocker—my supportive, loving boyfriend and the best horse groom and caretaker I could ever ask for.
This weekend is my NFR.
The Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event.
Mine and Cheeto’s first time making it here.
Today is cross-country.
Arguably my weakest phase.
I get inside my own head too much. At least that’s what my trainer always says.
“Thirty minutes until warm-up, Y/N.” Rocker hands me a bottle of Gatorade.
“Thanks, babe.” I smile, twisting the cap off and taking a sip.
Before I can protest, he’s already walking into Cheeto’s stall with his tack.
“I can do that.”
“No.” He shakes his head without even looking at me. “Right now your job is getting out of your own head so you don’t get hurt. I’ve got Cheeto.”
Cheeto lets out a soft nicker.
Rocker grins. “See? He’s on my side.”
I roll my eyes.
“I hate when you’re right.”
“I know.”
⸻
Warm-up goes surprisingly well.
Now we’re making the quiet walk toward the start box.
Rocker walks beside us with one hand resting on Cheeto’s neck.
“You’ve got this, babe.” He pats Cheeto’s shoulder. “Deep breaths.”
I inhale slowly.
“I think I could really go for a pizza after this.”
He laughs.
“I think we can make that happen.”
As we reach the start box, he stops walking.
“You got this, baby.” He smiles before kissing my boot. “I’ll be right over there with the team.”
He points toward the viewing area.
Then he looks at Cheeto.
“And you… take care of my girl.”
Cheeto flicks an ear and lets out another little nicker.
I smile despite my nerves.
The buzzer sounds.
Three…
Two…
One…
Go.
Deep breaths.
You can do this.
Fence one.
Perfect.
Fence two.
Easy.
Three.
Four.
Five.
Everything feels effortless.
Then we come to fence six.
Everything goes wrong.
I hesitate.
Cheeto feels it.
Instead of attacking the jump, he second-guesses it.
For one split second we’re caught between going and stopping.
Then everything flips.
The world disappears beneath me.
I’m thrown headfirst before slamming onto my back.
The impact knocks every bit of air from my lungs.
Somewhere nearby, Cheeto scrambles to his feet and gallops away, terrified.
I want to get up.
I can’t.
Pain radiates through every inch of my body.
We’d done a rotational fall.
People are screaming.
Footsteps pound across the course.
EMTs surround me.
Then I hear the one voice I need.
“Y/N!”
Rocker drops to his knees beside me, his face completely drained of color.
“Hey…” I manage through barely open eyes.
His hand finds mine instantly.
“You’re going to be okay.” His voice shakes as he kisses my knuckles. “I’ve got you.”
I try to nod.
Instantly regret it.
The pain is unbearable.
The adrenaline begins wearing off.
Everything fades to black.

Rocker’s POV
After the ambulance leaves, I make sure Cheeto is caught.
The vet checks him over.
Miraculously…
Not a scratch.
Once he’s cleared, I walk back toward the barns.
That’s when I hear her.
Y/N’s trainer.
“…I can’t believe she had a rotational,” she says into her phone. “She’s obviously not cut out for this level. There’s no way she’s staying on my team. I can’t have this kind of failure representing me.”
My blood boils.
I step around the corner.
She looks up.
Her face goes white.
“What the fuck did you just say about my girlfriend?”
She quickly ends the call.
“She failed. She’s done. Her and that stupid horse don’t deserve to be here.”
I take one step closer.
“You know what?”
“You are the sorriest excuse for a trainer I’ve ever met.”
“My girlfriend could’ve died today.”
“And instead of asking if she’s alive…”
“…you’re worried about your reputation?”
She doesn’t say a word.
“So yeah.”
“She’s done.”
“But not because you fired her.”
“We’re done with you.”
“And if I hear you talk about her—or Cheeto—like that again…”
“You’ll wish you hadn’t.”
I glare at her for another second before turning around and walking away.
She isn’t worth another word.
⸻
I wake to the steady beeping of hospital monitors.
Rocker is asleep in the chair beside my bed, still wearing his dusty boots.
“Rocker…”
His eyes snap open instantly.
“Hey.” He stands so fast the chair nearly tips over. “How’s your head?”
“Pounding.”
He gives me a small smile.
“Yeah… you’ve got a pretty nasty concussion.”
I wince.
“But…” he continues, “there’s no bleeding in your brain.”
Relief washes over me.
“You did break your collarbone, though.”
I close my eyes.
“What about Cheeto?”
His smile grows.
“My dad’s hauling him back to the ranch.”
“The vet checked him over.”
“He’s completely sound.”
“We’ve got our own vet meeting us when we get home just to be safe.”
Tears fill my eyes.
“He’s really okay?”
“He is.”
I try sitting up.
Pain instantly shoots through my shoulder.
I gasp.
“Nope.” Rocker gently eases me back onto the pillow. “You’re staying put.”
I groan dramatically.
He laughs softly.
Then he just…looks at me.
Like I’m made of glass.
“Quit looking at me like that.”
“Like what?”
“Like I’m going to break.”
His smile disappears.
“You had a rotational, Y/N.”
“You could’ve died.”
I don’t have an argument.
“Yeah…”
He climbs onto the edge of the hospital bed and wraps an arm carefully around me.
“I love you.”
“But I think it’s time you found a new trainer.”
I sigh.
“You’re probably right.”
“I overheard her after you left.”
“What’d she say?”
“She wasn’t worried about you.”
“Not even a little.”
“She said you were a failure… that she was kicking you off the team.”
I stare at him in disbelief.
“Seriously?”
He nods.
“So I told her exactly what I thought of that.”
Despite the pounding in my head…
I smile.
“Remind me to thank you later.”
“You can.”
He kisses my forehead.
“But right now…”
“I just need you to heal.”
