psa: do not stack rocks (especially river rocks)

riparian wildlife rely on the spaces between and under rocks to go about their lives- stacking rocks removes vital habitat for them.

this also goes for all rock-stacking in general. don’t stack rocks. rocks on or in the ground create microclimates that are vital for many species (especially amphibians as the cooler, more moist environment helps keep them from drying out.)

rock-stacking can also confuse hikers and backpackers that rely on legitimate cairns to act as trail markers, can increase the risk of erosion in certain areas, and, if done in the wrong place, could seriously hurt someone if they fall.

I understand this might be hard to hear for some people because it’s not something that a lot of folks think of as harmful, but it is a problem.

However, rock-stacks made out of and in the way of a running creek should be immediately kicked down or never made in the first place. River and creek stones are homes (sometimes NESTS) to many aquatic animals and moving or removing them can ruin ecosystems. Please make cairns on your own property with your own rocks and remember to stack responsibly!

I walked to the park this afternoon to just mentally touch grass for a while; and I just went and started stacking unattended piles of rocks. And also looking for nice rocks to take home.
