I view Steve and Dustin's season two dynamic more like: Steve teaches Dustin to become more confident and comfortable in himself, meanwhile Dustin pushes Steve to be a less self-absorbed and more mature person. Although Robin doesn't have Steve's issues (thank god), Will can still contribute to her growth by acting as her confidant and providing a different perspective at key points. In turn, Robin can help Will develop confidence in his identity and inspire hope about his future. He's not as alone as he thought. So, this is more about Will developing a sense of community for his own sake, rather than Will tapping Robin to help him get over his "straight" best friend.
