Flinders - bits, fragments, or splinters

“Hey, Robin, what does flinders mean?” Robin looked up from her book and slid her sunglasses up so she could better look at Nami. “I’ve never heard it before, I think.”

“Flinders?” Robin sat up. “I’m not sure I’ve heard it either. What’s the context?”

Nami hummed and chewed on her lower lip like she did when deep in thought. “‘Life had a way of turning you to flinders, but the trick was that sometimes flinders could be stronger than the original if you used the right mortar.’ It seems to be a bad thing. But it’s one of those trashy romances we picked up on the last island, and you know how the author likes to use words incorrectly as long as they are impressive sounding.” Robin rolled her eyes. Those books were terrible, but somehow they both kept reading them. At least they were fun to mock.

She crossed her arms over her chest and grabbed the dictionary up in the library passing it from hand to hand. “Maybe the author just made it up.”

Nami snorted. “Seems like something they’d do.”

Robin handed herself the dictionary and flipped trough it to the correct page. “It’s a synonym of splinters or fragments.”

“So she’s making a metaphor about cement?” Nami scoffed and took a sip of her drink. She glowed in the afternoon sun, and Robin thought for the hundredth time that day how very lucky she was. “Does that belong in a romance book? Really?”

Robin hummed, remembering the days when she’d felt like life had splintered her into a thousand pieces, remembering the stories Nami had told her, late at night when neither of them could sleep. She smiled.

Welcome to drabbles, the “They cancelled school again” edition. Additionally, Challenge Mode: never written the ship before.

48- rampage

She knew that she should’ve been concerned with the situation at hand, but it still made Nami seethe.

The battle had only just started and these stupid Marines had decided that she looked to weak to bother with. “Oh just you wait...” she muttered to herself.

“Something wrong, Miss Navigator?” Robin asked, pressing her back to Nami’s in a defensive stance. A group of nearby Marines screamed and a sickening crack sounded.

“I can handle it!” she insisted, attaching the pieces of her Scorcery Clima-Tact. A nice electric shock was waiting for those Marines. Suddenly, in her momentary distraction, a Marine swung at her, and she yelped in surprise.

Thankfully, Robin quickly restrained him, allowing Nami to release a Gust Sword.

She didn’t expect Robin to press a kiss to her cheek when she stood up straight again. “Well give them hell,” she giggled. “You know I like to  see you let loose everyone once in awhile.”

While Nami felt like standing in place, blushing and dumbfounded as Robin continued her attack on their enemies, she instead brushed it off. There was no time for that, she thought as she smiled to herself.

“What did everyone find?” Nami asked the crew, now all gathered back on the Sunny after exploring the latest island, sighing when no one had found anything particularly interesting (to her at least, as Robin suspected Usopp and Franky were rather delighted with Zoro’s accidental discovery of the strange metal, and Luffy seemed rather pleased with his new tiger friend).

She interrupted when Zoro was trying to explain where he’d found it, hoping to save everyone from that, passing over a bag of diamonds she’d found in the ruins of the once great city she’d stumbled across, and as Nami’s eyes lit up, she said, “I’m pretty sure there was more further in, but I thought Luffy-sencho would like to explore it too.”

Summary:  When she goes to meet her employer on a remote planet, Robin finds out this job won’t be quite like any other. Though having to work with someone is a nuisance, this might just be the biggest job she’s ever pulled, and the rewards are even greater than she could ever imagine. Written for opscifiandfantasy.
