National Anthem (2023, USA)
Director: Luke Gilford
Writers: David Largman Murray, Kevin Best & Luke Gilford
Mini-review:
Wow, what a refreshing take on the Americana genre. I think I had never seen this specific part of the queer community represented on screen before. The script is not perfect (I feel like the story is a bit rushed), but it makes up for its flaws with a great dose of sensitivity and grace. Also, I appreciate that it makes an effort to (mostly) avoid negativity, focusing instead on the importance of self-expression. The cast does a fantastic job bringing these characters to life, aided by stunning cinematography and confident direction. All in all, National Anthem is a movie with a personal vision that feels inspiring and relevant.
