Robert I Becomes King of West Francia After the Deposition of Charles the Simple
On June 29, 922, the nobles of the Kingdom of the West Franks rebelled against Charles III (Charles the Simple) and removed him from power. Frustrated by Charles’s rule and his attempts to strengthen royal authority, powerful aristocrats turned to Robert I, a respected nobleman from the influential Robertian family, and crowned him King of West Francia. Robert’s rise marked another period of political instability following the decline of the Carolingian dynasty.
Robert I’s reign was short, lasting only until 923, when he was killed at the Battle of Soissons while fighting against Charles the Simple, who attempted to reclaim his throne. Although Robert ruled briefly, his accession was significant because it showed the growing power of the Robertian family, which would eventually produce the Capetian dynasty and the future kings of France.
