Casiotone For The Painfully Alone - Roberta C. (Version)
As I was going to bed last night I totally flipped out when I discovered that there was a version of my favourite CFTPA song that I'd never heard before. It was released on Tomlab's Alphabet Single Series (letter G!) and the 7" was backed with a really slowcore version of 'The Subway Home'. I spent forty minutes scouring Google and dead Blogspots looking for a link to the forever out-of-print single, but it didn't seem like the internet had a copy for me. I tried Pirate Bay as a last resort, not thinking it would have the niche-r than niche object of my fascination. A search for "CFTPA" gave me nothing, a search for the full name gave me only a single torrent. It wasn't looking good. But even though this set of files missed out the entire first CFTPA (blasphemy), it had in there that Alphabet Series 7". Everything was perfect in that moment.
This version of 'Roberta C.' is totally lo-fi, a nice contrast to the original. It has some nice strings high up in the mix and, the greatest thing about it is that has female backing vocals from Racheal. She stands in as the de facto Roberta C, a voice we only otherwise imagine. It's a sweet gem, for me at least.
