“The trial took place in St. Joseph, Missouri, in early March 1939.

Wadlow filed the suit after Dr. Humberd published an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association that described Wadlow as a "freak" and detailed various physical and mental conditions, which Wadlow's attorneys argued brought him into disrepute and contempt.

Dr. Humberd's defense argued that "freak" was a valid term for someone so far outside the norm. The defense brought other tall men to court, including Glenn Hyder (7 feet) and Jack Earle (7 feet 6 inches), to support the argument that Humberd was an authority on gigantism rather than malicious.

The jury ruled that Robert Wadlow had not been libeled.

Robert Pershing Wadlow, surnommé le "Géant d'Alton", est reconnu comme l'homme le plus grand de l'histoire, avec une taille de 2,72 mètres (8 pieds 11,1 pouces) au moment de sa mort. Né le 22 février 1918 à Alton, dans l'Illinois, il était l'aîné de cinq enfants. À sa naissance, il avait une taille et un poids moyens, mais il a rapidement connu une croissance exceptionnelle en raison d'une hypertrophie de sa glande pituitaire (hypophyse), entraînant une production excessive d'hormone de croissance. ​

Dès l'âge de 8 ans, Robert dépassait la taille de son père. À 13 ans, il mesurait 2,24 mètres, ce qui faisait de lui le plus grand scout du monde. Sa croissance rapide nécessitait des adaptations spécifiques, comme des vêtements et des meubles sur mesure. Malgré sa stature impressionnante, il était connu pour sa nature douce et affable.​

En 1936, après avoir obtenu son diplôme de l'Alton High School, il s'est inscrit au Shurtleff College avec l'intention d'étudier le droit. Cependant, sa santé s'est détériorée en raison de complications liées à sa taille. Le 4 juillet 1940, lors d'une apparition publique, il a développé une ampoule infectée à la cheville, entraînant une septicémie. Malgré une intervention médicale, Robert Wadlow est décédé dans son sommeil le 15 juillet 1940, à l'âge de 22 ans. ​

Robert Wadlow was tall, REALLY tall, but he wasn't tall enough to have grown men at his knees like toddlers, the reality is plenty fantastical enough, no need to exaggerate
