The Saint: The Inescapable Word (3.17, ITC, 1965)

Nation and director Baker both had prior experience in sci fi work (Nation was presumably fully invested in exploiting his daleks by #this point) and there's more than a touch of horror to the misty forest scenes or underground lair. Nation would borrow liberally from his #own work here for a later episode of The Avengers (1969's Thingumajig) and the final scenes play out very similarly. what else? oh yes...#i may not be quite as biased as an unnamed mutual‚ but i can happily support m'learned friend in saying that James Maxwell is the absolute #best thing about this episode‚ as quite frankly the most pathetic (affectionate) head of security ever seen on 60s tv. he's sensitive and #nervous and does very little to aid in the investigation of a murder on his base except to get knocked out‚ worried‚ accused of the crime #and shot (oops spoiler sorry). i think he survives? it looks to be a shoulder wound and regardless of a lack of closure I'm choosing to #believe he did survive and immediately resigned his position‚ perhaps married Ann Bell‚ and started a group for people wrongly knocked out

I'm not sure why i remembered that way and if it's even true‚ but this is by no means a dud #episode; it's not a classic either‚ but a rather middling entry which concentrates more on familial melodrama than any real mystery plot #(save a last minute twist). a rare tv role for Julie Christie (she'd quit tv for the movies shortly after her starring role in 1961's A for #Andromeda‚ and when this aired she'd just made her first big splash in Billy Liar; hollywood's gain was the small screen's loss)#john serret's French Canadian policeman is (at least initially) much more Simon friendly than the usual cop; his subordinate Ross Parker #gets some nice moments as the hapless tail that Templar ends up treating to fancy dinners and cognac. the fight budget seems to have gone #up yet again‚ leading to a highly unlikely scene of Moore diving through a plate glass window and sprinting away without a scratch #oh‚ and whilst Simon has done a lot of smooching of his love interests of the week‚ this is the first episode to heavily imply that they #actually sleep together (must be the Canada air)

I guess I must have deleted it by accident. On the plus side #I think we've seen the last of the horrible squashed images! So. Here we are. Series 3 babey! And what a busy episode it is #With pretty much every character getting a significant moment including some significant returning figures from s2 #These include the dastardly Julie (boo! Hiss!) and the monstrous Nick Fox (gargh! Jeer!). Even worse the two are in league; both are now #Part of an advertising firm that are angling to get the business of the hammond Bros.. This doesn't bode well for the future of certain #Relationships. Elsewhere Jenny and Ted are starting to warm up to one another again after a frosty end to the previous series #It's always nice to see them getting on. But what's this... Barbara is back from a holiday.. And she brings news.. And a new character
