The Saint: The Queen's Ransom (5.1, ITC, 1966)

#the saint #the queen's ransom #1966 #leslie charteris #leigh vance #roy ward baker #roger moore #dawn addams #george pastell #nora nicholson #stanley meadows #catherine feller #gary hope #patrick westwood #peter madden #neville becker #john woodvine #larry taylor #john forbes robertson #john serret #andre charisse #what's that? you thought I'd given up on the saint? that I'd thrown in the towel‚ that I'm a coward and a liar? hah! well mud in your eye #bc here i am baby‚ back on my bullshit. i took a 'brief' break at the end of s4 before starting the color eps which ended up being 7 months #but actually the real gap between seasons 4 and 5 was more than a year. so what's new in Saintland? not much; immediately upon grabbing #this second boxset of colour eps and checking with my online transmission record i can see that network have liberally shuffled these eps #this first ep is on disc 2 while disc 1 features episodes from season 6 (!). as well as the shift to colour we also get a rearranged theme #(slightly more up tempo)‚ new titles and for the first time an entirely original script that doesn't even pretend to be adapted from a #Charteris story (true adaptations would be pretty rare from this point on). but it's a fun if familiar tale; Simon meets a deposed king and #his spoiled wife‚ and sets about teaching her some humility in true chauvinist fashion (as well as some stuff with jewels)#it isn't by any means a groundbreaking ep but if anything a degree of continuity between seasons 4 and 5 is somewhat welcome

The Saint: Judith (2.3, ITC, 1963)

I'm not sure why i remembered that way and if it's even true‚ but this is by no means a dud #episode; it's not a classic either‚ but a rather middling entry which concentrates more on familial melodrama than any real mystery plot #(save a last minute twist). a rare tv role for Julie Christie (she'd quit tv for the movies shortly after her starring role in 1961's A for #Andromeda‚ and when this aired she'd just made her first big splash in Billy Liar; hollywood's gain was the small screen's loss)#john serret's French Canadian policeman is (at least initially) much more Simon friendly than the usual cop; his subordinate Ross Parker #gets some nice moments as the hapless tail that Templar ends up treating to fancy dinners and cognac. the fight budget seems to have gone #up yet again‚ leading to a highly unlikely scene of Moore diving through a plate glass window and sprinting away without a scratch #oh‚ and whilst Simon has done a lot of smooching of his love interests of the week‚ this is the first episode to heavily imply that they #actually sleep together (must be the Canada air)

So spent most of the film trying to second guess the action #Sometimes referred to as Hammers first psycho thriller which isn't strictly true: The Snorkel and The Full Treatment both predate it #But this was the film to cement the format and was a big enough hit that it saw the company rush out a slew of imitators over the next few #Years. It's all a bit convoluted and dense but it has moments of real style. Visually Holt draws on Psycho and in particular #Les Diaboliques for inspiration. The murky swimming pool at the centre of the film is brilliantly creepy. As much as I like her Strasberg #Isn't the strongest lead for this kind of film and Lewis doesn't really get to excel until the final act. Hokey and arch but fun enough
