TREKMATCH! # 389 - TNG's "Menage À Troi" vs 2019's The Irishman
THE IRISHMAN
A guy who drives trucks works his way up through the ranks of his union and into a crime family where he starts to "paint houses (with people's blood)." Everybody is of course good at acting in this, even (especially?) Anna Paquin who speaks only two sentences and just glares in disappointment for the rest of her role. Al Pacino is just doing the same role he's done in every movie since Scent of a Woman but it's fun to hear his attempt at a Midwestern accent every now and then. You could say that at 3.5 hours the movie is too damn long, but it's really the last hour coda that elevates it into something special beyond just another gangster flick so I guess I'll take it.
GRADE: B+
STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION - "Menage À Troi"
A Ferengi captain kidnaps Deanna and Lwaxana Troi and Will after he falls in love with Lwaxana. The episode is, like many Lwaxana episodes, played for laughs, but I dunno, maybe the captain who kidnapped three Federation citizens and stripped two of them of their clothes should *not* be let off with a warning? Also this episode is where that meme of annoyed Picard comes from!
GRADE: C

TREKMATCH! # 284 - DS9's "If Wishes Were Horses" vs 2019's Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood
ONCE UPON A TIME... IN HOLLYWOOD
A washed up television actor and his BFF stuntman (and more?) are trying navigate the twilight of their careers while Sharon Tate is navigating the dawn of her own career. I don't know how much I should really say about the movie but it was definitely the most fun/enjoyable Tarantino movie in a long time. I don't exactly think it needed a narrator, which in cinema I've always felt is a storytelling failure.
GRADE: A-
STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE - "If Wishes Were Horses"
The station's just doing whatever in space when all of the sudden people's fantasies start coming to life, like for example Rumplestiltskin for Molly O'Brien, Buck Bokai (a baseball great from the 2030s) for Jake, and a horny Jadzia for Julian. Hey, woah there doc! You gotta keep it profesh on the station dude.
GRADE: B+
Victory to Hollywood, but Trek is up 143-141!

Four friends break into an abandoned insane asylum in search of a death certificate which will grant one of them a large inheritance. However, finding it soon becomes the least of their worries in a place haunted by dark memories.
