how can robert be given mercy if he had no mercy for himself from the start, (unwillingly) challenging the standards he’s set for himself (ex. not committing treason but now he’s done that and it’s irreversible) and then grieving over challenging those? he must be merciful to himself first before his fate gives him mercy, shouldn’t he?

I answered and wanted to post it here for archival purposes and so ppl know if they have similar questions:

TLDR: due to religious trauma in early childhood, Robert feels as though he should atone for his past sins if he has any hope of reaching heaven, not realizing that doing this is actually harming his and god’s relationship
