Robert Boyle
Artist: After Johann Kerseboom (German, d. 1708)
Date: Based on a work of ca. 1689-1690
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: National Portrait Gallery, London, United Kingdom
Robert Boyle (1627-1691), Chemist and natural philosopher.
A pioneer of modern chemistry and a founder member of the Royal Society, Boyle is most famous for ‘Boyle’s Law’ of the pressure and volume of gases. His commitment to experimentation and meticulous observation resulted in many important discoveries. Boyle’s theory that black skin was a degenerate version of white skin was used to justify slavery. He became increasingly uncomfortable with the cruelty that led from this, but never questioned the existence of the slave trade. Boyle’s wealthy, aristocratic background and his scholarly interests are referred to in his portrait, in the richly decorated room, black academic gown and book.
Prolly I should do it with (exclusively) science people one day, it was a fun experiment
A whole cast of Hooke's circle, drawn by gakuryokuup
"I shall leave with some regrets."
It takes 3-4 days to finish it 😭😭
