The Pitchfork industrial complex, what is that?! Thank you for asking. What? Oh, the answer, es, that is the term I shall use to discuss some musicians whose work benefitted greatly by being cherished by the media in the vein of Pitchfork and whose reputation can be determinded by such publication. I agree, this is a gross oversimplification of the influence of these newsletters, but, say, Cass McCombs probably didn't mind that as he became an intriguing figure on the indie rock scene. Then again, he's not just hyped, he does have that something, which resembles the something of the scene he's part of, i.e. folk in a weird way. He belongs to a set of Americana that can be seen as the indie rock version of the brand, if that makes sense.
