DAP: Is soup kitchen issue used to distract from road collapse?
KUALA LUMPUR, July 5:
DAP is concerned that the impact of the road collapse in Bukit Bintang has been overshadowed by the Federal Territories Minister’s comments on soup kitchens.
On Wednesday, two road cave-ins occurred at the same spot in the city’s Golden Triangle. Nobody was injured but the Monorail service was disrupted at that location.
Later that day, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said that Malaysians would risk a RM150 fine if they were caught giving alms to beggars.
The Putrajaya Member of Parliament also declared that soup kitchens operating within a 2km radius from Lot 10, Bukit Bintang, would not be allowed to operate. His announcement took social media by storm, overshadowing other issues.
“We are very concerned because of the possible impact of the road collapse, but it is not being highlighted because of what Tengku Adnan said,” DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said.
“I don’t know if that is an attempt by him to distract attention from the sinkhole but, of course, he is sinking himself into a bigger sinkhole by saying that,” he told reporters after speaking at a forum on brain drain in the country here this morning.
The Penang Chief Minister stressed that the issue must be addressed and the cause of the collapse identified.
There was also the question of escalation of costs when it came to reinforcing the tunnel for a road underpass to ensure there was no danger when a Monorail train passed through, he said.
One of the main pillars for the Monorail line is very close to the sinkhole. That is why the Monorail service has stopped at the spot for safety of passengers.
Reinforcing at that depth, Lim pointed out, was very expensive.
“If it can happen now, it can happen later. When you talk about that depth, the amount of reinforcement you have to put in, when there is a collapse … you have to err on the side of caution.
“The margin of error does not operate any more,” said Lim.
He also said that DAP parliamentarians in Kuala Lumpur would ask for a meeting with the authorities for them to explain the structural and safety issues as well as the cost involved.

Netizens spot suspects at Bukit Bintang road collapse
KUALA LUMPUR, July 2:
Showcasing their wit and fast photo editing skills, netizens have already attributed the massive road collapse to a multitude of sources.
The images have been widely and quickly shared over Twitter, Facebook and Whatsapp.
According to one image, police have questioned Marvel’s Asgardians Thor and Loki, popularly depicted by actors Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston respectively, at the scene of the collapse.
Among the other more recognizable suspects were Godzilla and King Kong.
But the evil Decepticon leader Megatron has also been spotted at the giant hole that appeared in Bukit Bintang, Malaysia’s Golden Triangle, as has his rival, Autobots leader Optimus Prime.
If these images are to be believed, a massive battle took place between at least four different intellectual property franchises.
However, how a giant chicken wearing a red and white suit and a humongous baby hippo became involved remains unknown.
