This is a little fic for @domaystic
Based on day 22: Being Overheard
A long shift.
A nosy woman.
A failed attempted set up.
Leads to Jack feeling soothed by just how much you love him.
He makes sure to show you just how much you mean to him.
Notes: wholesome fluff. just two people in love. established relationship
Word Count: ~1.4k
The minutes ticked on.Â
The hours merely dragged by.
And it was only 1 amâŚ
Just another 6 hours to go.Â
Only 6 hours, if you were lucky.Â
âŚAnd only if you ever got out of this conversation.Â
You were simply doing some checks, just a little pop in to make sure nothing had escalated, that everything was under control.Â
When your patient.Â
A Ms Paula Williams.Â
A lovely â if not gossipy â woman.Â
Had instigated a full on mission to set you up with every eligible man in her family.Â
Hell.
Every eligible man in her contacts list.
From the moment you stepped into her bay she had locked onto you.Â
Finding your demeanour charming. Your smile flattering, and oh! Simply so clever to be a doctor.
You were an absolute catch in her eyes. And she made it very well clear that you simply had to meet her son, or nephew, or whoever else she insisted upon.Â
It was sweet.Â
Well it wouldâve been more sweet. If you werenât beginning to feel tired from the shift.Â
If you didnât have another 10 patients still waiting to be seen.Â
And.
Well.Â
If you didnât already have a loving partner.Â
That was the one hurdle you had yet to mention.Â
Not being able to get a word in inch wise while Paula rambled on and on, about the very perfect man you just had to meet.Â
You smiled at her amusedly if not tiredly.Â
Just waiting for a momentâs pause.Â
A moment for you to interject.Â
But it seems thereâs nothing wrong with her lungs as she keeps on talking, barely even needing to take a breath as she lists all the fabulous qualities. Simply so excited by the prospect.Â
Passing interns, med students and nurses alike all send you pitying glances as they hurry away, not wanting to be caught in between.Â
She continued to ramble, âOh youâd simply love him! Youâd just have to meet him. Oh Iâll give him a call and have him come over! Never too soon to meet the love of your lifeââ
Gently, ever so gently, you interjected, âWhile I am flattered, truly. I am in a very happy relationship.â
âButââ
âIâm not really looking to trade out my current partner. Whoâs super considerate. Really, honestly I donât think Iâve met a nicer person out there. And my god, the way he makes me laugh, oh. I just really love him. Thank youâbut no thank you. Iâm very happy at the moment.â
âSounds like you really love him,â Paula sighs wistfully.Â
âYeah, I really do,â you smile softly. âHeâs one of the best things to happen to meâ
Unbeknownst to you.Â
Your partner.Â
The very love of your life.Â
Had stopped short just outside the bay, hidden behind the curtain. Frozen in place as he heard your words.Â
Jack knew you loved him. Â
There wasnât ever a moment where you didnât make it known to him.Â
But hearing you now.Â
Dote on him to a complete stranger.Â
A tender warmth bloomed in his chest. A smile formed on his face. As he carried on his rounds. Tucking away your words in his heart.Â
A small pep in his step as he feels invigorated from your love.Â
Ellis stands to the side with Shen, raised brows and smug grins as they look at him.
"Someone's looking like a lovesick puppy"
Shen hums in agreement.
While Abbot merely shrugs them off, "And?"
"Nothing, just that love looks good on you," Ellis grins.
Abbot's lips curl, a small smile tugging at his lips.
He didn't mind if he seemed overly loving. Not when it came to you.
Throughout the evening youâre given little tokens of his love throughout.Â
From a steaming cup of coffee, that was definitely not from here as it was a lot better than what was currently being served in the staff room. Brewed exactly how you like it.Â
To the little packet of biscuits he slipped into your hand when he noticed you were getting a little sluggish.Â
Jack was by your side in seconds whenever you needed him. That was just the way he was.Â
His hands finding any reason possible to brush against you, to clasp your hand for just a moment. To swipe across your back, to let you know he was there for you.Â
Showing you his love in the smallest of behaviors.Â
None of this was out of the ordinary. No more doting than usualâŚ
But there was a deepness to his sincerity. A little more care. Thought. Than usual.Â
And just perhaps.Â
At the end of your shift. As you leave side by side, Jack pulls you into his arms, far closer than usual. You find out just why he had been so affectionate this shiftâŚ
Holding you tightly. Tucking his head into the crook of your neck as he soaks in your embrace.Â
You feel his chest expand, rise and fall, simply letting his stress melt away as he holds you.Â
âYouâre really touchy this morning? Anything you wanna talk about?â you asked softly, hands trailing up to curl through the hairs on the nape of his neck.Â
The smallest shake of his head, he begins to pepper light kisses upon the skin of your neck, mumbling between the soft, sweet kisses, âI just love you.âÂ
You sigh as you feel his lips trail up along your jaw, to the corner of your lips, before shifting to nudge your nose with his.Â
Eyes meet yours.Â
Affection and love pooled within those hazel eyes.Â
Bright and as endless as the sky.Â
Softly you whisper, just as sweetly, âI love you tooâ
You surge forward, catching his lips with yours. Having missed the feeling. Missed his touch.Â
Heart swelling with love for him.Â
What had once started as a friendship.Â
Quippy words and dry retorts, punctuated with laughter even when the jokes were dark or dry.Â
It had soon developed into something so sweet.Â
Rare.Â
Something you both now cherished deeply.Â
Pulling back slightly you lean your forehead against his, while he presses chaste kisses to your cheeks.Â
âNot that I donât love this, but why are you so affectionate this morning?â
âI told you, I just love youâ
You sigh, with a small roll of your eyes.Â
Jokingly you say, âWhat have you done?â Knowing full well he would never do anything to hurt you.Â
He chuckles softly.Â
âMore like what have you done?â
You furrow your brows in thought.Â
Thinking over the nightâs events.Â
It had gone on as usual. Nothing out of the ordinaryâŚexceptâ
Pulling back you lightly slap his shoulder, with a faint annoyed expression. âYou totally overheard me last nightâ
The laughs that slip from his mouth, as smooth as honey, balanced with a timbre. One that rumbles in his chest.Â
Your cheeks feel a heat bloom, face feeling warm from his attention.Â
âYou werenât exactly quiet,â he remarked.Â
Groaning, âAnd you didnât think to intervene and save me from her matchmaking?â
âSeemed you had it handled,â the grin on his face wide and amused from your reaction. Adding on, âYour boyfriend sounds niceâ
âYouâre a jackassâ
âBut Iâm your Jack ass,â he retorted, arms slipping around your waist once more to pull you to his chest, pressing a kiss to your cheek, between each sentence.Â
âYouâre very sweet.âÂ
Kiss.Â
âConsiderate.âÂ
Kiss.Â
âAnd funny boyfriend.âÂ
You let out a small laugh, flushed by his affections, hands moving to hold his face, thumbs gently swiping across his cheeks.Â
âDid I mention handsome,â he added cheekily.
âI donât think I mentioned that,â you said in thought.Â
âCanât say you didnât think it thoughâ
Smiling coyly, âI suppose he is kind of handsome, in that ruggish sort of effortless wayâ
âIâll take what I can get, sweetheart.â
âWho knew me talking about you to others would make you so lovingâÂ
âYour words just have that affect on meâ he murmurs.Â
âIâll keep that in mindâ
And softer, with a gravel tone he say, âPlease doâ
Hands slipping around his neck, you rest your head upon his chest. Calming. Soothing.Â
Mind focusing on nothing else but the steady rhythm of his heart.Â
Beating just for you.Â
Just as your heart beats for him.Â
âŚ
Even if he was nosy at times.Â

Itâs easy to get into the safety of having something, to be sure that it will always be there.Â
The table was set, roses proud and tall in a vase arranged with care. There was a vinyl waiting, wine ready to be opened.
And there were you, in a dress you knew he loved, in a set of jewellery Sylus adored, waiting for a message telling you he will be late, telling you something came up.Â
The same scenario replayed itself like any other year but this time you wonât cry, you wonât wait for someone who should be here.Â

A One-Shot for @ailesswhumptober. If you prefer the AO3 experience- you can read it here. Hope you enjoy and it pulls at your heartstrings!
Home. He needed to get home. He was desperate to get home. He had gotten closer to the Koschei loyalists than he had originally intended. Infiltrating them so thoroughly that they believed he was on their side, that he would help them to take over Prythian. It hadnât been difficult to act like he was disillusioned with the Night Court- after what Rhys had done the disillusionment was true. And because of that, he had let his guard down. The drugs seeped through his body and he knew, he knew as surely as he knew that he loved Elain that if he did not get away, he would die. He had to get home. Now.Â
The world turned blurry and he shook his head. He had left the dinner as soon as his food tasted odd, making a hasty excuse- but he knew that someone would trail him. He had to focus enough to shadow-walk, it was the only thing that might save him. He focused on Velaris and one word- HOME- there was no place in mind, only a feeling. A feeling he had not felt since that night.Â
He crashed into an unfamiliar garden and heard a shriek as he slumped against the tilled soil. A hand grasped his and the familiarity let him relax. He was safe. He had made it home.Â
*********************
Elain tended her garden in the dusk light, the Riverhouse empty due to the rest of the Night Court being at the Hewn City. She decided not to visit this time, sure that Azriel would also be there and she could not stand to be near him. It was quiet, the silence only being broken by the gentle rustle of leaves and the welcoming chirps of the birds. The days were starting to turn cold again and she had wrapped herself in a warm sweater as she set out to till the garden beds.Â
The shadows around her started to ripple and she froze. His shadows. Those were definitely his shadows. Why was he here? They had stayed as far away from each other as possible since that night and even though her pain had turned to resignation, she had no interest in seeing him again. As Gwyn and Nesta constantly reminded her- she deserved someone that would not give her gift to another female- so that it didnât go to waste. She deserved a male that did not run away when the emotions got too much. She deserved better than him.Â
She steeled herself- preparing to tell him to go. To tell him that he was not welcome here, but as he appeared those thoughts flew from her mind. Something was wrong, something was gravely wrong. Azriel swayed and then dropped to his knees, his breathing uneven, his eyes wild and unfocused. She had never seen him like his. She sprinted over to him as he slumped into the soil, her hand finding his and gripping it tightly.Â
âAzâŚAzrielâŚwhat happened? Who did this to you?âÂ
He let out a grunt, one of his hands reaching out into the air forâŚnothing. Delirium. He was seeing things. Was she safe with him? She took her hand away and he whimpered, as pain bloomed on his face. She gulped and then placed her hands under his shoulders, trying to drag him that way, but he was too heavy. She looked at his wings and then to his feetâŚmaybeâŚmaybe dragging him by his legs would work better. Whatever was wrong with him- he needed to be inside, where it was warm and she could care for him, protect him.Â
She made slow progress, but there was no one here to help and she could not give up on him. Even with everything that had happened. He was here and he desperately needed help. When she finally dragged him into the kitchen of the Riverhouse, she let out a sigh. She rolled him towards the fire, settling him close enough that he would stay warm and still he shook. Why? Why was he shaking?Â
âAzâŚoh câmon Azriel- tell me what happened.âÂ
âTheyâŚthey put something in my systemâŚIâŚI canât think straight. PleaseâŚplease donât leave me.âÂ
He grasped her hand tightly, his eyes wild and he shook his head. His free hand clutched his head, as he squeezed his eyes shut and he desperately tried to stay with her. She could see in every bit of his body that he was fighting whatever had done this to him, but it was too much and he was losing. She was terrified of what might happen if he passed out again, so she settled on the floor next to him and pulled his torso into her lap. Cradling him. Sheltering him. She could go back to hating him after this wore off.Â
âTalk to me, Azriel. I need you to stay awake. Itâs just us and I canât leave you to go get help. Stay with me.âÂ
âThe colors- theyâre so prettyâŚyouâre so pretty.âÂ
His hand reached for her cheek, cupping it gently and then ghosting the air around her face. His eyes focusing and unfocusing. He didnât know what he was saying and she could not let the hope grow in her heart that he meant any of it. He must have been drugged.Â
âMy shadows brought me home. Home is you.âÂ
âYou donât know what youâre saying. Why donât you tell me about the shadows? How they came to you.âÂ
âNo. No. If I tell you what they made me do, you wonât be able to look at me the same. I need you to look at me like I am a good male, like I am worthy. Iâm so dirty and bloody, Elain- but youâŚâÂ
âI promise- I wonât look at you any differently, Azriel. I need to keep you awake- talk to me.âÂ
He looked like a small child, terrified that his parents would reject him from a small mishap. She knew that his past was not pretty from the little he had told her before, but she would not survive him telling her that she was beautiful when he had never said it in his right mind. That would haunt her worse than anything else he could say right now.Â
âYou are safe, Azriel. I promise. Just stayâŚjust stay with me. Iâll get you through this.âÂ
âThe shadowsâŚthey were my first friends. They came to me in the dark, gathered around me as I sat in that cell. Day after day. They told me things- stories of what the world was like outside. They brought me gifts, hopes. I learned from them what dawn was, what a sunrise could be. I learned that outside my cell and outside my fatherâs home- there was a great wide space. A world that had beauty. I was too weak at first. They snuck me food, water- anything to give me strength. ThenâŚthen they started sneaking me out in the night. They helped me see the world, sneak into the places I was never meant to be. I learned how to be quiet, how to hide, how to blend into the world. My shadows kept me company. And they protected me, Lainey. I only got sent to Windhaven because the shadows started fighting back.âÂ
His shadows writhed and she held him more closely. A smile spread on his face as he played with the shadows between his fingers and then projected them on the floor, manipulating them into various shapes. A flower. A crown. A broken heart. She gulped. Was that his heartbreak? Hers? Both? Neither? She did not get to think about it long as the shadows curled around her, caressed her.Â
âThey like you. Theyâve always liked you. Iâve always liked you. I didnât mean to, Lainey. I didnât mean to.âÂ
Tears streamed down his cheeks as his shadows continued to play. She found herself wiping the tears away and trying to figure out how to move him away from that night. She did not want to hear about that night. If he was not brave enough to say this while he was himself, she could not accept this now.Â
âWhat did they make you do, Az?âÂ
âNo. No. Not that. I promised I would never say anything about that. Rhysâ father made me promise- when he trained me- that I would never explain how they made me.âÂ
âIâm good at keeping secrets and his father is long dead, you can tell me.âÂ
âHeâs dead? Heâs really gone? Why do I still have the shadows? He told me the shadows would leave when I was no longer in service of the Night Court- when I didnât need to hide from the world anymore. Any time he could find me, detect meâŚthey- they tortured me. And then they taught me how to torture. He said that I would know how to break people best because I had endured so much. Iâve killedâŚâ He studied his hands, holding them in front of his face- tears still falling. He shook them for a moment and then hastily wiped them against his armor before bringing them back up. âDid I hurt you? Is the blood from you? I didnât mean toâŚI never wanted to hurt you.âÂ
âIâm whole. YouâŚyouâve never hurt me.âÂ
âNo. I have. I know that I have hurt you. But it wasnât with a blade. Truth-Teller. Rhysâ father gifted it to me becauseâŚbecauseâŚit called to me? It was meant for me? And it craves blood- he said it craves blood- and my job hadâŚhas a ready supply. Iâve wanted to walk away from it for so long. Iâve wanted to just be me. Why canât I just be me? What is so wrong with me? YouâŚyou see me. IâŚno one else ever has. Except my mother. My mother sees me, but sheâs scared. Sheâs scared of what writhes under the surface- youâre not. Why are you not scared of me, Lainey? You should be. You should be terrified of what I can do to you. What Iâve done to so many.âÂ
âIâŚI donât know who deserves it anymore. I thought I was doing the right thing. This is the only home I knew untilâŚI asked the shadows to bring me home. And they brought me here. This isnât home. I shouldnât be here. IâŚI should go. Iâm not supposed to be here. Iâm not supposed to be with you.â
He tried to push himself up, crawling out of her lap and she scrambled to grab him as he tilted towards the open fireplace. It threw both of them off balance, as they crashed into the cabinets and she grimaced. He was unsteady, but determined. Why did he need to get away? She threw one of his arms over her shoulders and rammed her body against him. Maybe the drug was wearing off enough that she could limp them to her room, that she could get him into bed to sleep this off.Â
âIâll help you leave, Az. Just lean on me.â She lied smoothly as he staggered into a wall, breaking a vase and causing a painting to fall to the ground. She would give anything for one of the others to be here, to help him- because she could feel that he was spiraling. That there was something he was trying to say- some secret that he needed to keep, but he could no longer do that in this state.Â
âDuring the war. The first one. I infiltrated enemy armies. I brought them to their knees with a few well placed assassinations. My shadows always guided me home then. They kept me company on the nights when I had to sleep in the graves of other fae- to hide from those that hunted me. I became a myth. I became a rumor. AndâŚI thoughtâŚI thought that I, that Rhys, that he might let me be real with you. I want to be real. I donât want to hide in the shadows anymore. Please donât put me back in the shadows. Iâll be good, Lainey. I promise Iâll be good.âÂ
His pain. His desperation. The way that he crashed into the wall, pulling her with him and he cupped her face so that she could see every emotion that played there. He could hide nothing. She searched his face and she let the words settle over her.Â
âWho said you canât be with me?âÂ
He shook his head and ground his teeth, trying to pull away, forcing her to catch him again. Only being able to guide him to the ground with a bit less of a thump, as she crashed down across his body. A groan left him and she checked him for injuries. Maybe there was something on the wall that had hurt him. He kept shaking his head as she settled over him and was able to confirm that there was nothing else- just his drug addled state. She grabbed his chin, forcing him to look at her.Â
âWho said you canât be with me?âÂ
âHiâŚhim.âÂ
His hand lifted and her head jerked to follow where he pointed. Rhys stood at the end of the hallway, his gaze dark and focused solely on Azriel. Azriel attempted to hide behind her and she stared at him. The realization washing over her. Rhys had told him to stay away and not to tell her, not to explain any of this to her. And he had just disobeyed Rhys and he could not protect himself- in the state he was in Rhys would tear him apart. No one deserved to be harmed when they were like this and her resolve settled. She would get him to her room, let him sleep this off, and protect him. Damn the consequences. And damn Rhys.Â
âIâŚI wasnât supposed to tell. Iâm sorry. Iâm sorry. Iâm sorry. Please donât hurt me. Donât hurt me again.âÂ
âHe wonât hurt you- Az. I wonât let him.âÂ
âHeâs too strong. Heâll hurt you. I canât let him hurt you. Let him hurt me instead. I can take it. I can take it, Lainey. I messed up. Itâs my punishment. Itâs what I deserve. Go- leave me.âÂ
âIâm staying. Youâre going to be safe and whenâŚwhen this wears off- weâll face him together.âÂ
âFace who?â Feyreâs voice broke in as Rhys continued to glower at them and she weighed her options. He was her sisterâs mate, but she believed Azriel. She believed every word he had said since he had landed in the garden- out of his mind with whatever they had given to him. He had no way to filter his thoughts, even though he had tried. She needed someone to help her get Azriel to a place where he could sleep this off. So she took a steady breath and met Feyreâs eyes.Â
âRhys. And I donât know whyâŚor what happened, but heâs been drugged and heâs in no condition to fight. Please- help me, help him. FeyreâŚâÂ
Other footsteps sounded in the hallway. Too many. There were too many people witnessing this and Elain knew, she knew that Azriel would not want anyone to see him this way. But his shadowsâŚhis shadows had brought him to her. She shook her head. She could think about that later. Right now- she needed to put space between Azriel and Rhys until Azriel could explain everything that had happened to land him here. Azriel needed to be able to fight for himself. She was not foolish enough to believe that she could convince Rhys to let this go, she just needed to buy sometime.Â
To her surprise, Cassian appeared and scooped Azriel up. He settled against him and Elain let out a breath she had not realized she was holding. Cassian was safe. Azriel thought or knew that Cassian was safe. He carried him effortlessly towards her rooms and her eyes went back to Feyre. She had not moved to help, she stood frozen. She had seen this before, when Rhys and Feyre were communicating telepathically. She was listening to Rhysâ side of this story- instead of seeing the utter terror that one of the most feared Illyrians to ever exist had displayed in front of her mate. In front of his High Lord.Â
âElain- the situationâŚis complicated.âÂ
âFuck. you. There is nothing complicated about his fear. About him shrinking away from Rhys. About your mate threatening him at some point- maybe many points in their lives. Itâs not complicated. You just donât want to see what is in front of you.âÂ
She turned on her heel and then sprinted for her rooms. Azriel had not been able to tell her the truth, but she could put the pieces together. She could guess when this had originated and even though he didnât deserve it, she would not let him be harmed. She would give him a chance to explain when he awoke and then she would judge if he deservedâŚif she could give him another chance.Â
Night burst around her and she let up a scream, feeling Rhysâ hands grab her for a moment, trying to pull her away. Why? She didnât know, but she could only imagine it was to weave his tale first. And thenâŚthen the shadows were upon them and Rhys jumped back. The shadows surrounded her, building a wall between them and she stood- glaring through them. She was terrified that he was not even going to be safe to sleep this off here. Where could they go? Where could she take him? There was no way he knew what he was saying, but Rhys didnât seem to care. He seemed to be more concerned about what else Azriel might say.Â
âIf you want a chance at redemption, at forgiveness- you will let him sleep this off. And then you will- both- come clean. Or so help me, I will tear this court apart piece by piece. I will torture you the way that your family has tortured him. He kept your secret for nearly a year, he would have kept it longer. Whatever mission he was on- heâs compromised and they did this to try to kill him. And youâre just worried about your own precious reputation.âÂ
âElain, I did what was best for this court. For you.âÂ
âAnd what about, Az? Is he not also a member of this court? Heâs terrified of you. And thatâs best for no one, Rhysand. And you fucking know it.âÂ
âGo, Lainey. Iâll stand guard. Heâs worried about you.âÂ
