Bonjour! So I'm a tad perplexed about your post concerning common core math. I'm really just not sure how the "new" way works and I was wondering if you had any insight on that? I am intrigued.

So the point is to find out how much it takes to get from 12 to 32, the difference between those two numbers. The first step, you add enough to get 12 to the nearest multiple of 5--you add 3 to get 15. Then you add multiples of 5 until you're just below 30--first 5 to get to 20, then 10 more to get to 30. Then you add what's left to get 32.
So, to get from 12 to 32, you had to add 3, 5, 10, then 2. This is the difference between the two numbers. So add those pieces together and you find that the difference is 20.
It definitely involves a few more steps in this case, but sometimes all a kid needs is a different approach to the problem. If this works better for some kids, then it's great.
