BACKGROUND

two's company, three's a crowd, four's the straw that breaks the camel's back. now that's funny, he can't recall ever asking to be born literally minutes after the first one.

l.a. is a haze of city smog and withering palm trees for a memory, so here's one that digs a little deeper: dad's hand clamped firm over his tiny wrist, passport held behind the back in the other. "we fought like dogs" is only a figure of speech in theory—at least, that's what his therapist has down in chicken scratch next to 'oddly cooperative,' 'overactive imagination,' 'cain complex,' and '???' then again, it's not everyday that you talk about how your dog-fighting enthusiast grandma one day decided that pitting her own grandkids against each other is the cleaner alternative.

to say that their parents were appalled by what they returned to is an understatement. the resulting move to new quarters was quick, the drive from the old villa to a sparkling new condo in seoul quicker.

the first time yejun realized the true potential of his abilities was when he made an aunt pass out in the middle of a family gathering. the image of the woman's ruddy, pimply face planted into birthday cake is something along the lines of a prized achievement. serves her right: auntie kapsook had been mid-shriek into an insult aimed at him again.

it's not resentment, but the lack thereof. this morning, the berries taste more tart than sweet, and they're smiling in a way that feels like they're stretching their lips to the last nerve. the exhaustion sinks into his marrow. he feels stretched out too.

fifteen and it’s first infatuation, sixteen and it’s the first kiss, seventeen and it’s the first fuck, eighteen and it's back to square one. rinse and repeat until it's the last summer before he's packing for gumi.

alpha? hard fucking pass. or so he said when he joined his first betting match. hellhound versus werewolf for this round—how's that for a coincidence?—and he'd put all his money on the newcomer from hellion. a case of sheer luck or he'd discovered a sixth sense for these things, it's simultaneously too fucking easy and way too hard to make a case for either side.

it's never been about finding the high ground or digging through the trenches. his sweet spot is in consistency, and its that and that alone that has let him move up from the safety net of the middle to being at the front of the pack.

WHAT CAN THEY DO?

DEFINITION

odynokinesis, or pain manipulation, is the ability to control pain, be it applied to the self or others. altering, inflicting, and reducing pain can occur at various levels, starting from targeting physical areas all the way up to mentally and emotionally rooted suffering. though the effects are much more potent by means of direct touch or eye contact, odynokineses requires at the very least some form of proximity, as the power can be applied by merely having the target within periphery. at its most elusive state, the user can create an illusion of pain in such a way that the receiver may become fully convinced that they are in agony–the same applies for illusions of being under no pain. this should not be confused with any healing or wounding powers, as odynokineses only focuses on the sensation of injury, rather than afflicting/treating it by any means. athletic and defensive skills such as hand-on-hand combat, agility, and general physical prowess can "enhance" performance, as being able to carry out pain attacks while on the move proves to be useful during the monster games. however, it should be noted that any amount of manipulation requires intensive concentration, which can often be an inhibitor to the use of one's full potential.

WEAKNESSES

pain attacks/suppression can be held between 15-90 minutes. type of pain, intensity, distance from target, and extent of mental capacity can influence this to varying degrees—obviously the more severe the outcome, the more energy it'll cost within a shorter time frame. pain illusions are the most difficult to accomplish, which last for only about 2-3 minutes maximum.

target must be within a 30-40 feet radius of the user. in order to shoot a concentrated amount of pain to a particular area of the body (e.g. nape of the neck, head, ankle, etc.), said areas must be exposed and visible.

one cannot deflect nor cause any physical injuries. pain might not be felt, but the cuts, scratches, bruises and burns will be present.

his target capacity is only 3 at a time, and even then the "pain" levels are not consistent between them.

as this is an ability exercised by means of touch and/or sheer will power, other sense and mind based powers (e.g. sense manipulation, pushing).

overexertion can lead to migraines, dizziness, and intense bouts of nausea.
