In class
So today marked the first actual day I got to be in class and working with room 14. I got to meet the one student that was absent on Friday when I met them. As of now I am observing and learning different teaching techniques that my CT demonstrates and helping around in class as much as I can. Today I was able to take some notes on what all happens during my time there.Â
One of the things that I noticed is new to elementary schools, in my area, is something called SEL (social emotional learning). Today the students’ prompt was -I can role-play my 2 calming down steps,so they got to do a little acting in small groups and then presenting their act to the whole class.Â
The 2 calming down step was them stopping what they were doing, putting their hands on their stomachs, and expressing what they felt (ex. I am feeling frustrated, I am feeling excited, etc).
Another really cool thing that my CT did is ask the students for a Glow & Grow, so the students would compliment the participating students as well as give them constructive criticism. And after this instead of a basic applause to them for a job well done my CT would ask the group performing what type of celebration they wanted. There might be more but these were the only ones the different groups said.

To wrap this post up the last thing I wanted to add was the way that the students point to something. Now this might be a cultural thing but I did notice this on Friday when I met them and I saw that a lot of the students pointed in a respectful manner, not with a finger but with their hand. This is definitely one of the most amazing things I have ever seen from 1st graders, they’re learning respectful gestures and I need to find out more about where this came from and how it came about. I stayed an extra 30 mins to talk to my CT and the Para to talk about the students a little more and figure out who I’m going to do my research on. I think I have a better understanding of who it is that I want to study.
Meet Rm.14
Today I began my internship. As I drove to the school my heart was about ready to jump out of my chest! I walked straight to the office to sign in, the secretaries were staring and smiling at me, and the principal shook my hand. I was so excited to know where my classroom would be at. They had a substitute guide me to the room. RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, I remembered so I would know next time. So many emotions were going through me. I was NERVOUS, ANXIOUS, EXCITED! I had butterflies in my stomach. I saw the class numbers stagger and before I knew I was there, room 14.Â
I got to meet my CT and her students. I could not contain my smile! All the students were everything I had imagined. My CT had all of them introduce themselves and tell me a little about themselves. We then had a Q&A about myself and anything they wanted to know. I wrote a letter to my CT and the students’ parents. And they handed me a welcome folder with a worksheet that all of them had filled out with fun facts about themselves. I stayed and observed the class for a few hours. I wish I could have stayed longer but I have to get used to leaving at a certain time.Â
I’m so lucky to have this opportunity to intern at this school. I cannot wait to see what this semester brings and all the learning that comes with it. Day 1.
