Chapter 5 - Part 7/7

Nell zoomed out of the football match they were watching, her mind had drifted away. She started wondering what it would be like to not wait for someone all day and night, to not be a half of a pair, to not depend on someone else. What would not being in love be like? She had gotten so used to it; she couldnât remember what life used to be like before Mathias.Â
Was this it for her? Was this all she was going to know? Waiting, depending, being a half and not a whole.
âWhat are you thinking about?â he talked low, but it was enough to snap her out of her train of thoughts. âYouâre not celebrating the goals.â
âLoveâ she shrugged, looking for his hand. âLife. I donât know; nothing important anyway.â
âDonât overthink, babe. Itâs not good for your health, you know that. Letâs just watch the match, alright?âÂ
âOkayâ she replied, breathing out. He bent to her side then, eyes closed, and she let him press his lips to hers. She knew this; this was familiar, this had always been good. And still, the thoughts filled her mind once again as they kissed:
Is this all?

âBabyâ Nell and Lennox both turned around at that voice. She looked at Lennox from the corner of her eyes, the way he followed Mathias steps with his gaze. He had known Nollaigâs boyfriend was coming, she had told him when they were having lunch. âLennox, hi.â
âHiâ the boy replied. Mathias laid his hand on Nells back, pulling her to him. She felt uncomfortable; public acts of love, or anything that could prove they were a couple, wasnât the usual. She felt too exposed.Â
âHow is it that youâre always together, youâre friends now?â Mathias laughed. Fake, she thought.Â
âFor the record, yesâ she didnât want to look at Lennox while saying that. The last thing she needed was to receive a disapproving look from him and feel even more embarrassed. âWorking on it.â
âGreat. Any friend of Nollaig is a friend of mineâ Mathias nodded, peeking at Lennox. The boy looked more amused than anything, his eyes going from Nell to her boyfriend, and back, like if he was watching a tennis match. âCan we go now? I canât wait to spend time with you.â
Mathias leaned in. It all happened to quickly for Nell. She thought about a kiss in public, again, and before she realized she was dodging him, blocking the way of his lips with her hands. What was wrong with him? As far as she knew, he wasnât big even on holding hands on the street.Â
âBaby-â
âLetâs go home, alright?â she smiled sweetly, though she was pushing him away blatantly. She could have sworn Lennox was chuckling in the background. âBye Len, see you soon!â she exclaimed cheerfully, dragging Mathias away already.
âLen?â Mathias arched his eyebrows.
âI told you. Weâre friendsâ she only looked back once, to find Lennox smiling, already entertained for the rest of the day.

âLennoxâ Nollaig called when he saw him already walking to his car. He turned around, eyebrows arched as if her voice had startled him. She smiled. âWait up. Are you in a hurry?â
âNoâ he smirked back. His eyes narrowed when she got to his side, as if he was trying to decipher what exactly was going on.
âThank you for lying back thereâ she bit her lip. âThese practices mean the world to me.âÂ
âI just like seeing the doc on edge, it wasnât about youâ he tilted his head.Â
âRightâ she sank her hands on her pockets, eyes fixed on him. He was lying. She didnât know why, but she wasnât about to ask. Heâd stop lying at some point, when the time was right. And she was going to help that time come. âI was thinking about what you said to the doctor on our second sessionâ Lennox looked clueless at that. âAbout my phone number.â
âOhâ his mouth sifted to the shape of the letter that came out of it.Â
âI think itâs a good ideaâ Nollaig took her hand off her pocket with her phone between her fingers. Lennox looked puzzled, and she laughed slightly at it. âYou know, just patient-doctor stuff.â
âRightâ Lennox grinned, taking the phone off her hands but still looking confused and unsure, as if he was expecting her to back down any second now. âPatient-doctor stuffâ he muttered while noting down his phone number on her phone, a small smile seeming to play in the corners of his lips. âGreat.â

âWelcome to Claraâs bakeryâ Nell heard her friend exclaim joyfully. If River had something, is that he always adapted quickly to any situation. Studying theater also helped, obviously. âHow can I help you?â
Nell covered her mouth with both hands. She didnât know exactly why she didnât want him to know she worked here.Â
âHiâ Lennox sounded distant, but slightly amused. She could picture his eyebrow arching without looking at him. âI thought there was someone else here with you.â
âOh, mmm-â River started. Nell hit him with her elbow, biting hard on her lip. Her friend kicked her back. âNo, there was only me.â
âA girl was here before I came inâ Lennox hesitated. Nell wanted to dig a hole in the ground and hide in it. She was going to be busted.
âMustâve been a reflectionâ River shrugged. âAnything else I could help you with?â he sounded half joyful, half irritated. If Nell hadnât been hiding, River would have gone all crazy-fan-ish on Lennox, but he was holding himself back. She felt kind of guilty, but her friend was doing one hell of a job, and she bet he was still happy inside that he got to talk to one of his favorites musicians.Â
âNo, thank youâ Lennox said. Nell waited, listening carefully to each of his steps on the tiled floor, picking on her friend saying goodbye and counting the seconds Lennox could take to wave his hand as he always did, and walk out of there. She stood up and sighed.
âOkayâ River eyed her, suspicious. âWhat the hell was that about?â

âHelloâ Nell rushed into the consult.
âHi-â Dr. Heimirsson stopped talking when Lennox entered the room after Nollaig, waving a hand in the air as per usual.Â
âHeyya, docâ he said cheerfully. The therapistâs jaw seemed to drop to the floor as his eyes floated between the people standing in front of him.Â
âAh, we-â Nell began without thinking. She lost her train of thoughts after those two words. She didnât want to get expelled nor kicked out, thatâs what was filling her mind and lot letting her talk with sense.Â
âWe ran into each other in the elevatorâ Lennox lied casually. Nell wanted to slap herself; why couldnât she just make up something like that instead of making everything look suspicious and awkward?Â
The doctor opened his mouth as if to say something, and Nell guessed he was still unsure as his eyes urged them for a real explanation from behind his glasses.Â
âDid you come together?â he frowned.
âYes. Five precious steps from the elevator to your door. What a great walkâ Lennox walked pass Nollaig and perched on the back of his chair. He looked at her from the corner of his eyes, the devilish grin beginning to form. It was all a role, someone he was used to playing as, she comprehended. âShall we begin now?â
