On September 12, the 73 meter long self-propelled barge Helena Cora ran aground near the locks at Ritthem, Netherlands. The Helena Cora was en route to Antwerp with a cargo of aluminum blocks. After it passed through the locks, the barge developed a sharp list to starboard. Fearing the Helena Cora would capsize or sink, the vessel’s master alerted the authorities and drove the barge onto a sandbank. KNRM lifeboats, tugboats and a pilot boat were dispatched to the scene. The pilot boat was able to safely transfer 3 persons off the Helena Cora. Assisted by the tugs and lifeboats, the Helena Cora was able to right itself. Tugs later pulled the Helena Cora free on the rising tide. No reports of injuries.
