BTS from “The Island”, a personal stop-motion animation sequence that was part of a longer film. Even though the edited segment was less then a minute in length, it took all day to shoot one take. Knowing that ahead of time was key and so we rehearsed the scene many times to get it just right, cautiously shoot more frames than needed to cover ourselves. Weeks of planning, prep and prop making were required and what I love best about this type of work. Coupled with the collaborative nature of film making, it all makes for a very fun time. 13 y.o. Rodello Coronel Jr. was excited to find a pair of swimming goggles in the sea of plastic trash surrounding his family home on the edge Manila Bay. He wades through the flotsam every day or so to collect recyclable materials to help bring in some money for his parents and eight siblings. Many of Manila’s poor live in stilt houses on the silty shore line, and are the most vulnerable to storm surge during cyclones. I went back a few mornings later, and hardly recognized Rodello on his way to school with a back pack and school uniform.
