i just finished reading âvanishing new yorkâ by jeremiah moss (and i thoroughly enjoyed it, and it made me angry, lol). iâve probably bumped into the blog the book stems from a bunch of times, and didnât realize it.
if youâre unaware for some odd reason, iâm from queens, NYC... and iâm fucking cranky about the current state of this city. iâve seen it though the 80â˛s, 90â˛s, and clearly the 00â˛s. my mother is a native new yorker as well. she was born in manhattan, and raised in queens (4 blocks away from my current residence, actually). iâve heard countless stories from my mother over the years (obviously), and feel like i was right there with her too. there was just a different vibe in this city before the 00â˛s that is hard to describe. itâs just not there anymore... and i donât say that from nostalgia. i really mean it.
itâs a book of facts, quotes, and tidbits of jeremiahâs NYC experience circa the early 90â˛s. overall, i agree with so much of the book. i didnât think i could get anymore jaded as a native new yorker, but here i am. hating every corrupt politician, real estate developer, even more so - the idiot currently residing in the white house, and robert moses. itâs a more enlightened level of loathing, i guess you can say.
the only thing that i disagree on, and perhaps itâs my age (probably not), i donât like the complaining about ALL chain stores. now, maybe iâm biased because i hail from the outer borough âmidurbsâ as i like to call them (northeast queens, on the border of nassau county - kind of suburban, not quite rural, but in the middle), but some chain stores i do appreciate.
:*(

re: the village voice ending their print edition
if you follow me on twitter or on instagram, you know iâm constantly complaining about new NYC, specifically, the village. i donât have a preference between east and west. i spent tons of time between both as a teenager.
weâd start on W4 and work our way all over the place. our first stop was always st. marks. the village voice was often picked up, and for my friends and i, was a way to see which upcoming shows we were going to. sure, eventually weâd read articles (at least i did), but going straight to the ad pages for concerts was my favorite.
the village voice made me feel like i was alright. i wouldnât say ânormalâ, because what fun is normal? accepted?
i felt accepted enough walking around downtown, but the VV definitely helped.
i know itâs not dying, but the print version being gone is a big piece of it dying. just like that time they let musto go...
