Wonderful film indeed! #RIPCarolSutton #Repost @jaredwatchesmoviesdaily ・・・ Today I watched Cane River, a romance drama about the romance of two people from different class backgrounds and the effects it has of their families and own lives. Never released after the director's death in 1982, the film eventually was rediscovered in a vault in 2013 and screened to the public only last year. It was the only film directed by Horace B. Jenkins, whose prior experience involved working on documentaries. Knowing all that, it makes sense that this Romeo & Juliet inspired romance tale is done with naturalism and completely devoid of melodrama. Despite the simple premise, the film also explores colorism and the unique history of Louisiana and the tensions between the descendants of slaves and their owners that still doesn't get wiped generations later. All of this helps elevate it from a simple romance story. While the production quality is a little rough, I liked the chemistry of the two leads and I was also quite fond of the dialogue. It also had a cool original soundtrack. Overall, I found myself caught in its charms and I'd recommend it for anyone who likes a good romance story or films that are missing gems. This one is currently streaming on Kanopy and The Criterion Channel.
