Gluee (2014), Eversince (2016), Rip Bladee (2016), D&G (2017), Working on Dying (2017), Red Light (2018), Bladee
Bladee’s natural point of comparison is, of course, Yung Lean, yet Bladee (especially in these earlier works) has never been so lyrically provocative or instrumentally bold as Lean. While the beat side of these releases is often luxuriously layered and wondrously indeterminate, the songs as wholes often feel lethargic and cumbersome. That being said, it is immensely difficult to listen to certain highlights and not find some kind of wonder. There’s a sparkling depth and luminous brilliance to so much of this – even if much of it does feel like a prelude to the huger, more stately and complete Icedancer.
Pick: ‘Shadowface’, ‘Skin’, ‘7-Eleven’, ‘Cinderella’, ‘Lordship’, ‘Decay’
