Demonifying regeneration
A while back (because I am slow and what better time to post a theory than right before the next chapter which might utterly destroy it?) @ari-no-exorcist noted that despite being shot in the head, Rin doesn't seem to have suffered any changes in personality like often occurs with head wounds in the prefrontal cortex... But @facets-and-rainbows remarked that's just what Demon!Rin is. This was meant as a joke, but... It actually makes a frightening amount of sense. You know that thing about people basically becoming a whole new person over the span of 7 years, due to the various speeds at which cells are replaced within your body? It's revealed early on that Rin, even unawakened, had abnormally quick healing... But ever since he came into power, that ability to regenerate damage became even stronger.
And it occurred to me... If it is demon power that helps the cells restore... Wouldn't that mean the new cells are inherintly more demon-like?
Wouldn't that mean that Rin automatically becomes more demonic with every injury??
Now, this whole regeneration thing ties in very, very nicely with AnE's central theme of willpower, or belief or imagination, if you will. The thing that determines whether you control a demon, or it controls you. It amplifies the influence of choice. Because the thing that steers your actions (brain) is compiled out of cells too. Which means when you choose between something like fight or run, you also choose more or less chance of injury, meaning more or less demon cells, meaning more or less influence on the brain... No wonder Shiro tried to raise Rin to be as gentle as possible, and witheld all exposure to exorcism from him! You don't want a half-demon working a high-risk job like that: aside from it potentially fucking him up mentally through the daily horrors (ahem, Yukio), or exposure to magic stimulating his hidden powers somehow, the potential of it aiding in Demonification through getting your ass kicked is through the roof as well.
Yukio shooting Rin in the head was literally the best possible way to trigger Demon!Rin's full awakening.
Yukio: Gives the pass (Shoots Rin) Satan: Kicks the ball into the goal (Breaks Kurikara) Result:
And now for the VERY interesting part...
YUKIO KNOWS THIS.
...Did Yukio get so blinded by hatred that he forgot what effect his action would have? Or is he deliberately trying to bring out Demon!Rin? For what purpose? Just to test himself against his brother at maximum strength? Or because he is underneath it all actually hoping his brother will harness that power and defeat Satan & Lucifer? And in that regard... Friendly reminder that Mephisto, the indesputable expert on demon-hostbody relations, constantly puts Rin in harm's way. Deliberately.
Pictured: pot, calling kettle.
So @noodlecat29 dropped this list of nautical flag signals in the AnE discord server and I've been having some fun with them.
(Feel free to add on~)
Rin and Yuri look so alike when they comedically freak out, don't you think?
They do, but while this wasn't drawn by Kato herself- I must bring up this image from the Salaryman Comics because he definitely takes after his other parent as well~

I still miss Rin. In light of this chapter I kind of want him to be in Romania so Lightning's group can grab him as they storm the place. I bet even with his somewhat shaky grasp of things Lightning (and Lucy and Osceola for that matter) would be very interested to hear what he's seen. And I love the idea of this team going time traveling together to witness the Blue Night. How about you? Would you want Rin to show up or do you think he'd detract from everyone else?
I think Rin needs some time apart to rediscover himself tbh. I’m sure he’ll go back to his friends eventually once he’s digested stuff a bit… Storywise, that also seems the most compelling construction: The Yukio side, the Rin side, and the Rebellion who aims to save both of them. What I’m curious about is to find out where the hell Rin is- I was so sure it was something Shiemi-related, but now I’m starting to wonder if maybe it has something to do with Yuri or Shiro instead… Maybe both, and it’s actually the garden of Amahara (a.k.a. heaven)? I’d love an Uncle Iroh moment between Rin and Shiemi’s grandmother.
I know there's no chance of this happening but I wish Rin would grab his mother at the point she was supposed to die a bring her back with him. And then he could be like "Guys, look! I found Mom!" But seriously I'm looking forward to everyone else reacting to Rin's information as much as anything. What will Lightning say when Bon tells him? What will Bon think? Will Shura wander in at some point and freak out about Rin's new look and reason for it?
That’s a good one… How Rin will tell others when he gets back. Thus far he has been able to keep to the background as he seems pretty scared to interact, so I doubt he’ll grab his mom, but there have been some theories about Rin being the trigger for Blue Night (and turning out to be his own father but I doubt that’s going to happen- thank god xD). Maybe Yuri DOES catch a glimpse of him somehow, though…As for the others… Knowing Rin he’ll just stumble into the cafetaria or something and start some incoherent story interrupted by many questions:“What do you mean by seeing the past? Like in a magic mirror??”“No no I actually walked around in it. Turns out this key I had was able to do that the whole time. Boy, Yukio’s gonna be piiiiissed when he finds that out-”“What key? What are you talking about?!”“Oh this key the old man gave me to hide my sword when I needed to- hey come to think of it I wonder if he knew what it could do…”“Wait wait wait- so your dad- well, your adoptive dad, was a time-traveling clone??” “Rin, dude, did your brain get fried because this sounds like some hallucination or something-” “What the hell are you talking about, we fight demons remember-” “Yeah but time-travelling clones..??”“Guys, guys- He didn’t time-travel, well, maybe he did, I dunno, but yeah he was a clone, but that’s not his fault, Mephisto’s been running this whole facility and it was all for Lucifer-”“So he IS a traitor I knew that asshole couldn’t be trusted-” “Let’s kick his ass.”“Nonono I mean well yeah but no-”“Is your sword going to get fixed by the way? I mean, I don’t know if you noticed but you have horns now-” “Never mind the horns, what about that evil twin thing?!” “Yuki isn’t evil!” “No I mean Whitey McBurnitall over here-”“GUYS!”
DUDES. I just realized something. Many people noticed how Rin really looks like Shiro now with the white hair and the uniform.
But.
Doesn't Yukio remind you of anyone as well...? With his new eye patch and lab coat?
I mean...
