MIXED COMPANY, no. 1. Eurythmics, Touch. Synthesizers were around and well-used long before these two, *obviously.* Wendy Carlos playing Bach with Robert Moog’s help in the sixties, George Harrison and Pete Townshend playing synth on rock canon songs. I even remember being fascinated by Queen putting “No Synthesizers!” in scripty type inside the gatefold of A Night at the Opera and kind of not believing it because those sure sounded like synthesizers to middle school me. And of course the Cars and Gary Numan and all those late 70s radio guys. Thomas Dolby... but did anyone commit to synths more than Dave Stewart? This album is great, and I enjoyed it more than I expected. Every song is catchy and individual, and of course there’s that Kohl’s Muzak hit “Here Comes the Rain Again” but it’s just a start. Obviously pairing all those fatty wooshy tinky synth sounds with Annie Lennox’s force of nature singing and real instruments like trumpets and baritone sax and xylophones and real strings and a live bass player keeps it from being too robot-y. But the real trick is they wrote fun, hooky songs.
