Man falls off boat, swims 7 hours before rescue

KUALA TERENGGANU, May 19:

A Thai fisherman had to swim for seven hours before being rescued by an oil rig worker after falling off a boat early on Saturday morning.

The victim, known as Tok Saphon Samechit, 32, was then handed over to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), said Kuala Terengganu Maritime Enforcement chief Captain G. Xavier Thevadas.

He said the victim was believed to have fallen overboard at 4am while answering the call of nature and was not noticed by his friends, but luckily managed to cling on to a barrel.

“The victim saw a light from an oil rig and swam for seven hours towards the rig.

“He screamed for help and fell asleep due to fatigue, before the oil rig worker found him in a weak state at 4.15pm on Saturday,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

He said they received the information at 6pm yesterday and sent a vessel which arrived at the oil rig, located 72 nautical miles north-east of Kuala Terengganu, at 3.10am.

The victim was brought back to the MMEA jetty here and sent to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital for treatment.

“However, no injuries were reported,” he said.
