Judgment in Reverse: When has your character found it difficult to forgive themselves?
Riley contemplated the question a moment before answering. “Well,” he began, “I think that would require a multitude of things. Like me regretting things, I can’t even begin to think of something that I truly regret.”
He looked around the room and then to his father. “This is wrong,” he breathed. “I can’t do this— I can’t bring myself to do this.” His hands tightened around his gun that was aimed at the family in front of him. His breathing growing rapid and he could feel his heart pounding away in his chest. He knew these people, he had been around that child since he was born. He had never once spoken out against his father for their lifestyle, never had he said no to anything, but this? He couldn’t do this.
“You’ll do it or you’ll be right there with them.”
“You would have me killed? Your own son?”
“No, I wouldn’t have you killed Riley. I’ll pull the damned trigger myself.”
His throat tightened and just as the woman cried out Riley squeezed the trigger. A loud bang followed and echoed through the house before it was replaced by screaming. The small boy moved to run but Riley shot him in the back. The husband lunged at him and before he could even get close Rielen hit his knees with the end of his gun to knock him down. Ri looked to his son then as he shot the man in the back of the head. “Don’t ever question me again.”
