I started snowboarding in season 1988/89. Later on I imitated the style of Craig Kelly and fell in love with the Burton brand... which all had an impact of me ending up to be a graphic designer. I love it when I find lost photos of lost friends. As Matt Vining, Trude Lerfald and I walked across the Mt. Baker parking lot headed for Mt. Hermon, instead of toward the icy Mt. Baker Banked Slalom, I heard a voice say, “Hey Ken, where are you guys headed?” “We’re going to hike Mt. Hermon” “Can I come?” “Of course you can Jake, duh!” So we spent the day hiking pow and bullshitting about snowboards shooting a few photos and all that kind of stuff. As we hiked back up for another run I said to Jake, “It would be cool if you had a Velcro closure lower and a lace up upper. It would keep your foot down have less pressure and you could have different tensions between the two parts of the boot” “Hmmm, interesting.” Jake replied. Then he pulled out a little notebook and wrote it down. A year or two later the Work Boot came out. When I saw Jake at the trade show he laughed and said “That was a good idea and a great day riding”. Every once in a while as I pull on my boots I think about how lucky I was and am to have friends like Jake and how happy I am to still be riding Burton 30 years later. I love snowboarding. I don’t need to remind you how hectic the last year has been... but I love being reminded of how fun, meditative, fulfilling, and joyful snowboarding is these days - the people in this community, the places this board can go, the countless conversations and connections shared on lifts and skin tracks, and the endless inspirational places this ol’ shred stick has taken me. For one piece of equipment, the list of gratitude is quite a scroll. . Today is the anniversary of Jake’s passing. To the man who continued to innovate and challenge the status quo all in the name of standing sideways, we are so grateful. So much of my identity and my greatest life lessons have come from snowboards in one way or another, to the point I really can’t imagine the person I would be without it. ESPECIALLY in times like these, the community and joy from snowboarding are helping me keep my head on straight. . Thank you, Jake , for keeping this fire stoked.
