Achieving a masters degree was a feat in itself, to add to the difficulty of the task was the fact your support system had been gone throughout the entire process to achieve and succeed his own goal of being in the NHL. maybe you were being selfish, sure but what was once a normal phone call with your beloved boyfriend turned into an argument that was never supposed to happen.
âsooo youâre coming for my graduation ceremony right?â you smiled widely, your phone set up as you sat in your apartment, the one you two used to have together senior year at boston. âabout thatâ the tone shifted, your stomach dropped âwhat?â you gave him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he was talking about something else? right? âi donât think iâm going to make itâ the pause of silence was long, tears welled in your eyes âwill what are you talking about? iâve been telling you the date for months nowâ he sighed. he lazily set his phone down to be pointed at his own ceiling. âi mean seriously will you know how important this is to me. this is like me skipping your draft which may i remind you I took time off forâ you set my phone down on the coffee table with a thud. âbabe, im not saying itâs a complete no, i just have things like practice and play offs are right around the same time and if we make it i cant just drop my entire career for one day.â you couldnât control your anger at this point. âalright, whatever. didnât want you there anywaysâ you continued to work on your homework as silence filled the room. âplease donât be like this, itâs out of my controlâ âyup. got itâ you ignored the phone, trying to calm down, one deep breath at a time. âi mean are you seriously trying to fight right now?â you heard him, but didnât acknowledge it. âno. i have homework and im sure you need to be up for practice tomorrow so ill talk to you laterâ i picked up the phone and didnât give him a chance to answer before you pressed the red x. resuming back onto the lock screen of you and will, senior year of college, him in his jersey post last game of the season.
you cried that night, after your homework was complete and you couldnât study anymore. the silence filled the space heavily, it was too dark, too warm, too silent. you had the option to go online and finish your degree, you knew long distance wouldnât be easy sailing but you knew that time apart makes the heart fond plus you didnât want will to pay the lease break fee for this apartment.
that morning you dragged yourself out of bed. a long shower, a long moment staring at the coffee youâve been holding for too long, thatâs when your phone dinged, willyâ€ïž was the notification iâm sorry for what i said. i canât have you be mad at me. you chose to at the moment to fully ignore the message. you didnât want to fight, you hated fighting with will but right now emotions were high and you needed a minute to clear your thoughts. hours went by and you couldnât focus on anything other than that message. you flipped your phone on. âiâm sorry for over reacting. i get this is apart of your jobâ you sent it and exhaled.
the rest of the day was calm, but silent. it was nagging at you not hearing from will, what was he doing? practice was usually in the mornings and he was done by noon. your mind started to panic, thoughts rushing to you about the possibilities, until you swear you heard your front door unlocking. it opened slowly and you jumped up, grabbing your water bottle as a weapon. âwow wow calm downâ you saw his smile and dropped everything, including your jaw. âwill what are you, how are you, what?â you couldnât believe it, your smile widened before you finally moved your feet and met him at the door with a big hug. âi couldnât have you mad at me for that longâ he said as he held the back of your head with his hand. âi love you, i love your academics and your stubbornness and im sorry for being so mean. iâm under a lot of pressure and i took that out on youâ he looked at you deeply, cupping the side of your face and stroking your cheek. you kissed his hand âand im sorry for not considering that. it was selfish of meâ you replied, smiling a tiny bit. âyouâre my world, and thatâs why youâre skipping class tomorrow and taking the weekend with me in san joseâ he held up a plane ticket with a smile âwill! you canât be seriousâ âdead serious, and about that ceremony. iâll make sure iâm hereâ he gave you a kiss on the forehead before saying ânow, shall we pack your bag?â
