âMcCoy, could I have a word?â Rick asked. Cooper finished off the last of his beer, setting the glass down on the bar.
âYeah, sure thing.â
He followed Rick out of the Spread Eagle into the cool evening. He plucked a cigarette from its pack and stuck it in his mouth before offering the pack to Rick.
âNo thanks,â Rick said, holding a hand up, ânot right now.â
Cooper shrugged and returned the pack to his back jeans pocket before lighting his cigarette.
âSo whatâs up?â He said, blowing out a stream of smoke.
âWellâŚuh,â Rick coughed uncomfortably, and Cooper, thinking it was because of the smoke, quickly took his cigarette and dropped it, crushing it under the heel of his cowboy boot. Rick looked at the ground and scuffed the toe of his own cowboy boot against the gravel of the alley, before looking back up at Cooper, who was waiting expectantly.
âLook, I donât really know how to say thisâŚâ
Cooperâs heart fluttered. He thought he knew what Rick was about to say and he couldnât pretend he hadnât been looking forward to it for a while now. Rick was probably the most attractive man Cooper had ever met. He had been a little standoffish, around Cooper anyway, so Cooper had given him space, only flirting lightly here and there. Plus Rick was a U.S. Marshal so Cooper had every reason to avoid him. But now Rick was about to reveal his own attraction to Cooper so they could finally get things going.
âItâs cool,â he prompted after Rick had said nothing for several minutes, âsay whatever you wanna sayâŚ.â
âI know who you are,â Rick said suddenly.
âUhh, yeah? Iâm Cooper,â Cooper laughed.
âYou didnât even change your name,â Rick gave him a pained sort of look.
âWhy would IâŚ.what?â
Realization crashed over Cooper like an icy wave. Rick knew who he was. Rick was a U.S. MarshalâŚRick knew who he was. Cooper swallowed, sweat gathering on his palms as the two stared at each other.
âOh.â Cooper said.
âOh,â Rick echoed with a nod.
Cooperâs heart thudded for an entirely different reason now. He couldnât go to prison. He just couldnât. But he didnât want to have to hurt Rick either. He waited.
âWhat uh, so what um..â he began when Rick said nothing.
âWell I really wasnât sure at first to tell you the truth,â Rick said, âby all rights I oughta arrest you now, turn you in when this is all done with.â
Cooper swallowed again.
âBut,â Rick continued
âBut?â
âYeah but. I see how much good you do for these folks around here and how much they need you against thisâŚthis cult and wellâŚ.I ainât gonna do it. I ainât gonna arrest you.â
âWaitâŚ.really?â Relief blazed through Cooper.
âReally.â Rick said with a smile.
âWow! Thank you I mean,â Cooper grinned, âthatâs real decent of you, man. Câmere.â
And he wrapped his arms around Rick, pulling him into a bone-breaking hug.
âOof,â Rick huffed, thoroughly surprised. Cooper hung onto him for several minutes before breaking off the hug, laughing.
âYouâre a good guy, Rick.â
âAm I?â
âReal good. Let me buy you a beer.â
âAlright then,â Rick smiled again. âThis is just for now you know,â he warned as they walked back inside, âI might still arrest you when this is all done with.â
âYeah yeah,â Cooper said, âyouâre welcome to try.â
