Neilsons are a very affectionate species, who in the wild live in large groups. Unlike with most other species, these coveys are only loosely based around family groups. Neilsons are famous for 'adopting' others into their coveys, including outside their own species. This is thought to be the true origin of the story of the Ugly Duckling! Certainly scientists have documented cases of Sepps, Wouts and even a Matteo raised within a covey, who for all their obvious differences were clearly valued members regarded with clear affection.

This makes Neilsons extremely compatible when it comes to bonded companions! There are no species which are absolutely contraindicated, although true aquatic species such as the Matteo or Benoît will require an enclosure with room for multiple habitat zones within. Although Neilsons cannot fly like a Sepp or glide like a Lenny, they are capable swimmers, and tolerant of a wide range of temperatures.

In the wild Neilsons often bond with Sepps or Brandons, however in captivity they are often found as companions to nervous or rescued Mathieus, or indeed to other species. Neilsons have a calm and steady personality, yet are willing to fiercely defend a vulnerable companion if need be. Combined with a gently playful yet never boisterous nature, this makes them ideal for rescued companions. The skills of trained Neilsons are often used during the rehoming process, as part of the intial period of veterinary care.

A Neilson should never be kept alone, apart from during short periods where this is unavoidable, such as whilst undergoing veterinary treatment. Coveys in the wild generally number around twelve to fifteen members, which is obviously impractical for most keepers! Two to three bonded companions are generally recommended for the novice keeper.

Trained Neilsons have also become far more widely known over the past decade. They are one of the most recognisable emotional support species, and most people have likely seen at least one Neilson wearing the characteristic black vest denoting them as an official support companion. A Neilson is not right for everyone or for every mental health condition, so always seek advice first from your own medical professional. It is important to remember as well that trained or no, a companion Neilson still needs to be loved and cared for, and his enclosure will need cleaning just as regularly. Never adopt a companion you do not have the headspace to adequately provide for.

Neilsons should be offered a minimum of three hours supervised outdoor time each day, but will benefit from longer if this is available. Enrichment is primarily social, and a Neilson and his covey will enjoy having a circuit of visits to various parks to look forward to.
