I saw this text post on /r/GirlGamers while I waited for my queue in League of Legends. The purpose of this post is to present evidence of how League of Legends fails women in their art design of characters. I have always been aware of this fact but was happy that League of Legends at least had women as playable characters, but League of Legends has had plenty of time to progress in this regard since I downloaded the game in 2011 and should not be blundering their character designs in 2019. The user’s exigence for this post is her need to express her frustration at League of Legends as a women player and as a Morgana main, which really spoke to me. She appeals to logos strongly by providing images as evidence in her logical argument that the character designs are problematic. She appeals to pathos by expressing her love for the game and her resulting disappointment when the art team fails her, which gains her sympathy from her audience. She appeals to ethos by telling her audience that she mains one of the characters that is undergoing one of the art reworks and by establishing herself as a woman gamer in League of Legends with knowledge of all the splasharts for League of Legends. She posted this text post to /r/GirlGamers because it is a safe place to express these kinds of frustrations and to start discussions about women character designs. However, she did try to post this text to /r/LeagueofLegends first and was met with downvotes. Talking about gaming issues related to women in these main subreddits for games often results in this dismissal or in outright hate. I read this well-written post, commented on the news to me that the art was changing in ways I didn’t expect (and now dread), and saved it for future reference when people ask why I complain about women character design in games.
