what’s their song? whatever was playing through the wall in this scene, obviously !! ksdfjhsdf i have been chewing on this (and listening to various playlists), and i think there are a few that have the right vibe. my first thought was “it has to be a chili peppers song, clearly,” and i think “don’t forget me” is a good contender—sure, it’s about drugs like all of their best songs, but it always makes me think of relationships that are thrilling and raw and perhaps not the wisest in the long run; another one that stood out to me is “after dinner” by unloved, which just feels like a very leonor pov song; relatedly, maybe an even better fit but listed last because it just occurred to me, would be “french kiss” by sleep thieves. exhibit a: "i want to fall with you, fall faster, fall closer now, see the world and fuck all of that and let it go / along with you" ... perfect? perfect (EDIT: lana, obviously ???? alexa play "burning desire" … no, alexa play “peppers” ???)

what do they tease each other about? i’ve shown this a bit, but i feel like the biggest source of teasing must be how different their backgrounds are. that’s part of what i find interesting about them, that there’s a veneer of mutual understanding, but their upbringings and worldviews and ways of moving in the world are so disparate. so far, leonor’s on the receiving end—which, yeah, she is very much a pampered princess who doesn’t know anything about anything and acts snotty, which is funny if you’re a Normal person in comparison. renzo is also, in comparison, much more coarse and rude, which i think leonor finds amusing. plus, there’s the fact that it’s easier to joke about something dissonant than, like, treat it seriously.

🎶 MUSICAL NOTES — what type of music does your oc like? do they listen to music very often?

music is julian's main interest, which is unsurprising considering he comes from a musical family ! his mother and father are professional musicians (his mom is kind of a joan baez/stevie nicks/ann wilson figure, and his dad is a carlos santana-esque guitarist). since they were not around much during his childhood, music was a way to connect with them—both when they were around and in their absence. his formal occupation is working for the crown, and he spends a not-insignificant chunk of his free time partying, but listening and playing music is a big part of his life. he had a little cousin band with his brother, damian, and german when they were all teenagers. i don't think they play much together anymore, but julian has enough musician friends that it doesn't matter much (including, of course, their bancroft cousin). if you want him to have more then let me know, open call, give him more friends and such djfdf

the kernel of inspiration for julian as a character came from the fact that i like incubus and have always thought brandon boyd circa the early 2000s was hot. so, anyway, i associate julian with the alternative rock genre, with acoustic guitars, with vulnerable songwriting. he likes folk music, which is the genre his parents got their start in. but, he really is someone who appreciates every genre, from those to hip hop to electronica to jazz and blues and everything else. he goes abroad a lot for fun and leisure, and part of those trips are definitely attending concerts and open mics and things like that, to enjoy the local music scenes and popular venues.

oof, this is so spicy ! aaaaaand, surprise, it's not actually a headcanon because there's photographic evidence, smh. this is from the zuriñe prequel i need to finish. i have no idea who the hussy is but ... she does not have a happy ending, lmao. obviously the whole situation isn't all her fault, but still !

as for zuri herself, that's interesting ... she definitely has never, but she was once young and vivacious, so i'm sure there were plenty of compelling opportunities for her to pass up. honestly, i think she just likes having something to hang over nando's head for decades and decades. it loses its power if she doesn't maintain the higher ground, in her mind. plus, she loves him (ew), and he loves her (ew). re: the above, i actually didn't want to commit to making it canon for them, so i kind of played with the idea in part ii in the most oblique passing reference manner possible .... :^)

oh damn ... this hurts my heart already. it’s hard to answer with much specificity without getting into spoilers, since i think the question cuts right to the core of what i’m building toward for them each. i’ll give it a shot anyway !

rowena does something in part iii that she will regret for the rest of her life. it's arguably her biggest regret, for a person who has a lot of regrets about the sort of wife, mother, daughter, and friend she's been. what she's grateful for is the fact that she's eventually forgiven for it by some people. other things she's grateful for would be: her grandchildren, all of whom i think she loves in a more pure sense that her own children; the sense of existential belonging in the world that living in uspana for so long gives her; the fact that she was born into a wealthy and powerful family, married into a wealth and powerful family, and has the security of knowing her descendants will also have wealth and power at their disposal. at a smaller scale, ro regrets that she never really learned how to cook even her most favorite foods, and she’s grateful for peaceful things like being barefoot on soft, warm ground and seeing bunnies in the backyard on quiet evenings. she’s also grateful for alfonso, although i think she always harbors a shadow of a doubt as to whether or not she regrets marrying him.

EDIT: i wrote a whole ass essay, and i am so sorry for everyone akddfsgds shoutout to that anon that asked me to tag long posts lmao

uspana is an international travel destination. public policy has almost always been geared toward keeping it a beautiful, bountiful place that belongs to everyone. for uspanians themselves, obviously that has direct sustainability and spirituality implications. for foreigners, it means the kind of natural beauty that “development” and “modernization” tend to destroy or undermine in other places. uspana probably has the oldest trees in the world in which it exists, for example. its beaches are pristine. there’s a diversity of climates and biomes, from the tropical coast and jungles to the interior desert-y landscape to the forested provinces in the northwest. a significant portion of the land is managed locally and open to the public. it’s a pretty place with lots to do!

some things i’ve mentioned in posts: 

nakawe, the capital city: in zurine’s intro episode, a group of students are visiting nakawe palace. nakawe has other palaces, including the actual king’s residence (where alf got bitch slapped by his mama), but nakawe palace is both the heart of the government and a historical site. so, people like to visit and see the throne room, the historical displays on various floors, the politicians and chambers in which they meet ... you might catch a glimpse of the royals themselves if you’re there at the right now. i think the palace has been there for much longer than nakawe has been the capital. you can also see parts of it in the wedding reception posts and in this dumb boys outtake, among others. the royal mausoleum is in nakawe, along with others belonging to clans with history in the area. the public can visit the royal one when it’s not in use by a family member. alfonso and rowena’s wedding took place at the royal sacrarium, which was built like seven centuries ago to hold the ancestral bones brought from yaas. (later, family members were buried in the mausoleum, and the bones are moved to the sacrarium when the mausoleum runs out of space.) it’s sort of their equivalent of a church, i guess, although there aren’t really “services” there.

canaris is the big beach destination, although zoning codes keep it from being particularly urban. it’s where alfonso and rowena lived for the first few years of their marriage, and it used to be the capital of uspana. when rowena visits him there in this episode, it’s essentially a montage of some sites. they ride horses on the beach, go to the old square that’s the main shopping center, and visit one of the national museums focused on the area’s history. the museum also hosted the mother’s day exhibit decades later. alfonso takes rowena on a tour of the old palace ruins in this episode; i think it’s seasonally open to the public for private tours, since it can be a bit treacherous to walk around. the 1980s babies turn canaris into a party town in the 2000s, for better and for worse skdflkdsg

alam palace is in yaas, and it’s the ancestral seat of the house of tecuani. i think they do tours when the family isn’t in town, but it’s attached to a village of sorts that people can visit and tour year-round. there’s lots of cool stuff to see in yaas because it’s the first site of uspana’s national origin story. the palace itself is several centuries old, although the space where it sits has been a home basically since time immemorial. creator’s mount is also in yaas; it’s a sacred site, where alfonso and rowena were married and a place that beatriz liked to visit with him. relatedly, the penalties for taking things from this province are particularly steep, like stones from ruins or ceramics or so forth.

this hasn’t come up in part iii, but beatriz establishes another family holiday location in intizara as an adult. it’s mainly because she doesn’t like going to alam palace after alfonso dies, or really yaas in general. this place doesn’t have much connection to the reyes family; it’s an ancestral home of her husband’s family, i think. it becomes more of a tourist destination during her lifetime, although i imagine it was always a quieter and more temperate alternative to the coast around canaris. the royal house is not open to the public, but you can drive by on a nearby hill and see the front yard pretty well. bea cultivated olive trees on the property because of a special reason i shall not divulge, and my new headcanon is that she gives reyes brand olive oil to both random commoners she encounters and foreign royals who visit uspana.
