Chapter 3: the medbay
SUMMARY: post battle, Rex sees a loopy Anakin in the medbay. Just slight fluff! Chapter 4
WARNINGS: description of drugs, Anakin being loopy from meds basically.
Dim, blue light washed over the briefing room. Standing at attention, Captain Rex addressed a bleak-looking Admiral Yularen with mud still caked over this armour and bucket tucked neatly under his arm. From the opposite side of the holotable, the Admiral asked Captain Rex for his report.
“The Separatist outpost has been destroyed, sir. Minimal clone casualties..however..”
Trying to ignore the pain radiating down his back despite the bacta that had been applied minutes before and now facing a glaring Admiral, Rex gritted his teeth. “We were not able to recover the data located within the outpost. Extraction was still a success, sir”
Before Admiral Yularen could retort back, a hologram of Obi-wan Kenobi appeared in the middle of the table. “Anakin, why-”
The Jedi's brows furrowed in confusion, steady blue eyes gazed over the room. “Where is Anakin?”
Admiral Yularen folded his arms in expectation of whatever batshit crazy ordeal Skywalker had gotten himself into. Obi-wan was met with a lonesome Rex. Concern flickered in his eyes noting the scorch marks and mud splattered across his armour, the specks of blood on his chestplate. And the look of a confident facade where the cracks of exhaustion and anguish were starting to seep through.
“General Skywalker is currently receiving medical treatment, sir” Obi-wan’s gaze narrowed, Rex felt the weight of it. “Define ‘medical treatment’, Captain”
Rex thought to himself how long was it going to take to get used to explaining his Generals condition post-battle. Almost always he had gotten too close to death at the expense of trying to save others. He admired his selflessness, not many other Jedi were like his.
But Force did Rex wish he'd stop giving him and his men heart attacks each and every time he was flung into battle. “He is stabilized, but has sustained blast-related injuries, General”
Of course Obi-wan sighed to himself internally. “Very well, thank you Captain Rex.”
“Thank you for answering one of my many questions, General Kenobi. Captain Rex informs me the main mission was a success, the outpost has been destroyed. But they failed to obtain data that would have been valuable to the Republic.”
Obi-wan casted a thoughtful hand through his beard, the Captain braced for the upcoming criticism. “That is unfortunate. Hopefully we'll have another shot soon enough. Good work Captain. I expect to see the full report.”
Strightening, Rex gave General Kenobi a curt nod “yes, General”
The hologram ended. The debrief concluded. Captain Rex was still locked in attention, he wore a fixed gaze and a tight jaw.
“Captain” Admiral Yularen dismissed him. Rex turned distinctly on his heel and left the briefing room. As the cold air from the corridor hit him, the silence hit him harder. The blaster fire was gone, there were no explosions. Just the occasional officer passing by, with the hum of the Resolute carrying in the background.
He sped up his pace and made it to the medical bay after an eerie, silent walk. Before opening the doors Rex let out a huff, straightened his back once more with a roll of his shoulders and marched right in.
A strong sterile smell filled Rex’s lungs, monitors beeped and whirred, medics paced across the room with their hands clutching datapads. Thankfully, it seemed to be a quiet night and it had been seven hours since Rex saw the General.
He should be stable now…
A medic led him to Anakin’s bed. Rex hesitated before he drew the curtain, his gloved hand gripped onto the fabric. How is it that he had stormed Separatist strongholds, came face to face with the Sith and yet the fabric bunched up in his hand was proving to be the toughest of all battles?
Biting the bullet, he pulled the curtain aside. The Captain’s shoulders instantly dropped, letting out a breath he did not know he was holding. His General was fast asleep, he was safe. He was…peaceful? Rex was quite honestly staggered to see Anakin this…he wasn't sure if he even had a word for whatever he laid his eyes upon.
But Rex was certain the General’s health had improved significantly. The steady, soft beeps of the monitors that were hooked up to him gave Rex no reason to be alarmed. So, he began to turn around and reached for the curtain.
Vulnerable
That was the word Rex was looking for. At the same time the realization settled, his eyes widened.
Anakin was looking right at him.
Rex was a Gallaze caught in headlights. Though Anakin’s gaze was nothing but softness, his eyelids heavy with sleep, it pinned Rex. He didn't dare move. The Captain's arm was suspended in the air, he didn't even get round to closing the curtain as his fingertips ghosted over the fabric.
Kriff…
Struggling to think of what to say to ease the now apparent silence, Anakin stirred. Causing silky curls to flop to the side, tickling his nose. The only thing that covered his chest were the bacta dressings wrapped around his ribs, a hand rested lazily on top. Soft groans escaped his mouth as he arose from his slumber. “Rex?”
His voice was thick with sleep, bringing his other hand to shield his eyes against the dim medbay lights causing his brows to furrow. “You gonna stay there all night Captain or are you gonna come in?” his words came out as a deep, breathy timbre with an amused tone to top it off.
Embarrassment dusted his cheeks in a soft pink, Rex secretly thanked the low lighting of the medbay to prevent his obvious discomfort from becoming apparent. Especially in front of his General. Automatically standing at attention, the Captain squeezed the bucket tucked under his arm as he stuttered out “G-gen-sir, I'm so sorry I didn't mean to wake you”
He kicked himself for acting unprofessional. Not only did he wake Anakin, he failed to conduct himself like a proper soldier, like a Captain. Though it seemed like Skywalker didn't seem to care as he lazily ushered Rex to sit on the medical cot. “C’mere” he murmured, his voice laced in a soft, drowsy tone.
Being a good soldier, he followed his orders. Leaving his bucket to rest on the floor, he made sure to lower himself onto the bed carefully. Trying not to cause more discomfort to the Jedi who laid slightly propped up and barely awake below. Though he was still half asleep, Anakin felt Rex’s tension as the Force simmered around him.
“You’re tense”
It wasn't a question, rather a statement made by Skywalker which Rex did not wish to entertain. Subsequently Anakin pulled his lips into a deep frown, tilting his head. Wishing his Captain would just look at him. “If I recall correctly, you were the one who almost got blown up earlier.” He still refused to look at Skywalker.
He couldn't, not when his words tumbled out of his mouth harsher than intended to be, his gaze fixed to his bucket on the other side of the room which was barely visible. Anakin made a sound reflecting his saddened mood causing the Captain to briefly close his eyes. “Im sorry, I should be thanking you for saving my life”
Only now did Rex return his gaze to Anakin, noticing his blown pupils though thick lashes and the slight pout on his face. He seemed to be studying the Captain, deep pools of blue, the same blue painted on his armour swept across from his temples, back to his gaze and finally to his lips.“That’s not necessary, sir”
A pause hung uncertainly in the air. Rex’s exhaustion resulted in a delayed reaction, subsequently causing his confusion to grow into an uneasy sensation elevating his heart rate. And when he eventually caught on, Rex stalled. Anakin was fixated on his lips. He hadn't heard a single thing the Captain had said.
“General?” His voice this time took on a gentler tone, slightly raising up in pitch due to his worry for the slightly drugged Anakin. The meds given to him must've been strong if they are only starting to fade away now, Rex thought to himself. Hell, he probably shouldn't be sitting on his General's medical cot attending to his half-conscious fumblings.
Skywalker took a slow, long blink and let a drowsy smile turn into a chuckle as he laughed at either himself or Rex, the Captain had no clue. His laughter was infectious as they shared their moment together. Captain Rex couldn't remember the last time he laughed. As an easier silence settled over them, Anakin mumbled up at Rex “you always talk like that?”
The teasing note caught Rex a little off guard, although he knew his General to be more direct compared to the other Jedi he’s encountered. And not to mention the various amounts of meds circling his system and how sleep still tried to pull him back under. Obviously.
“Like what, General?” Rex hid the amusement that kept up his slight smile. He did feel a little bad for finding amusement in Skywalker's current condition. Anakin winced as he readjusted his position, running a hand through loose curls.
“Like..”
He trailed off, focusing on something behind Rex. A low hum escaped his lips as he collected whatever thoughts a slightly drugged Anakin Skywalker was thinking of. “Just.. I dunno..proper, yeah. You're…”
Anakin sighed, dark lashes occluded his gentle eyes, a smile began to spread across his face. His expression was pure warmth despite the pain that lingered across his skin. Being amused at Anakin’s take, Rex tilted his head “Thats… what I was made for, sir.”
This reminder of Rex's position disrupted the unspoken pull between the two. Rex knew what he was, his role. The readmittance of this was soothing to him. Out of all the confusing things the galaxy threw at him, he remained unwavering and stable. Nothing about Rex’s existence was open to interpretation.
This disruption was evident in the Force. Like a rope so taut the individual fibres frays and eventually start to snap.
As Rex waited for another one of Anakin's ramblings, he was instead met with the soft sound of sleep. Any evidence of pain was long gone, the only sound he made was the gentle huff of air from his nose as he slept.
The medbay was silent once again. For some reason, Rex had no inclination to move. Instead, he stayed frozen on the cot next to his general. He knew it was inappropriate to stay this long, yet Rex couldn't ignore the way the blanket had slipped off Anakin's shoulder. Exposing his bare skin.
His hands moved before he could stop himself and carefully laid the blanket across Anakin's shoulder. Achingly slow, his hand returned to his side.
He paused there for a moment. He didn't look at Anakin, he looked at the floor instead. The silence lingered. And after it lingered for too long, Rex picked up his bucket and left.
Rex laid motionless on his cot. His hands neatly laid across his stomach as he fixated on the pitch black ceiling above him. Sleep had betrayed Rex, leaving him to deal with the consequences. Finding himself cycling through the events of earlier.
The image of Anakin's bloodstained smile was all Rex could think about. This wasn't an animal. This was his friend.
It made Rex feel almost out of place. This was his friend, yet he knew nothing about him, nothing about whatever had its teeth sunk into him. Adding to Rex's confusion, he recalled Anakin's continuation to shake even as he began to stabilize.
He closed his eyes, hoping for sleep to relieve him from thoughts he knew he shouldn't be thinking.
It never came.

Chapter 2: the fog
SUMMARY: Injured in battle, Anakin is far gone and it's up to Rex and Kix to pull him through. Chapter 3
WARNINGS: depictions of blood, violence. No heavy descriptions of gore, medical related stress and trauma, near death experience, panic symptoms, big ole whump.
The lush vegetation underneath his boot softened his stance as his lightsaber cut though the fog and whatever droid unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end of it.
Sweat clung to his body, the air heavy and thick. The mud which was now covering his boots made it even more challenging to act swiftly.
It did not bother him. He did not feel how his dampened strands of hair clung to his temples, or the sweat plastering the robes to his skin or the deafening sounds of clone troopers shouting commands as blaster bolts hammered down on them.
It was as if his surroundings had faded to black. Leaving just him and the enemy.
Frustratingly, he struggled to lift his boot from the mud that was insistent in holding him in place, and how each time he knocked down a droid, another one seemed to replace it immediately after.
They were getting nowhere. And they were wasting time.
Time Anakin Skywalker didn't have, so he pushed.
Making sure his footsteps were light and quick to not get trapped by the mud and rotting vegetation beneath him, he swung his lightsaber with immaculate precision.
The impact of receiving multiple blaster fire pushed him back, which only made him push forward.
Even as he lost his footing, he gritted his teeth, gripping his lightsaber so hard like it was going to disappear and continued his assault.
Something had taken over his body, as if he were on autopilot. Something that time and time again he had tried to ignore.
But it felt so good to give in.
Until it didn't. Because the next thing he knew he was being tackled to the ground by 80kg of plastoid.
The explosive Anakin didn't see had just gone off, creating a wave of heat to shriek over them.
Anakin made an attempt to move which was made difficult due to the fact that he was now face down in mud.
And the fact that captain Rex had his arm around Anakin's back, holding him in place.
Captain Rex had just saved his life.
Anakin wondered why.
Time seemed to slow down, Anakin fought his conscience slipping away but he couldn't miss this.
Not when captain Rex was carefully taking his arm from Anakin's back to lay him down.
All while Rex knelt over him, one leg propped up as he dodged the red bolts flying towards them as his blaster took out the surrounding droids.
Other 501st troopers provided them with enough cover for Rex to tear his helmet off.
“General! Are you alright? Can you hear me?”
It was all a blur
He looked like a memory, whatever words he spoke came out slurred and distorted.
Sweat clung to the captain's face, becoming illuminated every now and again by the flash of red and blue blaster bolts cutting through the fog. Making his features appear almost iridescent.
Still sprawled out on his back, the only response Anakin could give was a smile, bearing bloodstained teeth.
Rex was horrified, what animal had he found beneath him?
A few drawn out beats passed and neither of them had the nerve to look away.
Anakin had blood smeared across his cheekbones, mud splattered across his face. He was still smiling.
An unsettling sensation sent a chill down Rex’s spine at the realization he was eye to eye with a savage.
But he quickly snapped out of it. Rex’s training kickstarted his brain.
Ducking his head to avoid a blaster bolt, Rex fired back a few shots before returning attention to his general.
“Sir, we are gonna get you out of here”
As the final words were spoken, Rex cupped the back of his generals head, lifting him up in hopes to pull him back into reality.
But before he got the chance to lift him, any defence Anakin possessed had ebbed away. His breath worryingly unstable, every wheeze made Captain Rex even more on edge.
He didn't really know if what was happening was real. Above all the searing pain, he could just make out the warmth of his captain's gloved hand wrapped around the back of his neck.
Not strangling him like the monster did most nights, this time it was gentle, safe. This definitely wasn't real, how could something so gentle ever touch him?
So he made sure it was real, instinctively pressing his cheek into Rex’s palm. His nose ghosted over the base of Rex’s thumb.
Rex froze.
He had no idea how to respond.
His brows furrowed in confusion, he tried to pull away but he couldn't. It was too strange.
This feeling only got worse as he was met with those facets of sapphire peering though heavy lashes.
Something inside Rex recoiled, alarm bells rang in his head. His body screamed at him to just do something.
Instead, he was terrifyingly met with a foreign entity.
Whatever ‘it’ was, it sickened his stomach, leaving it to curl and twist out of his control. Its unknownness was dangerous.
Rex could not allow that.
Shouting into his wrist comm for Kix to give the general a proper assessment, he attempted to lift the fallen angel into his arms.
As Captain Rex lifted Anakin to his feet, he put his arm around him with the other spanned across his chest and couldn't help but notice how the general shook. Vibrating against his gloved hand.
“Can you stand, General?” Rex barked.
Anakin found it more and more difficult to concentrate though the stinging as he drew ragged breaths.
Rex fought the anxiety that bit at him.
A second too long passed. The heat in the air, the screams, the deafening sound of a blaster bolt flying past only inches away from your ear dizzied Anakin.
Still, he managed to croak out “y..yeah”
His uncertainty displeased Rex as they struggled though the mud clinging to their boots. Together, they had probably managed only 20 steps until Anakin’s knees began to buckle.
“Kriff..”
Rex prayed the inevitable wasn't happening so soon, his back ached under the added weight of his general.
Where is Kix when you need him…
Attempting to keep up the pace as Rex blasted his way through the fog, their fate only got worse.
Worryingly, Anakin’s plastered curls fell under Rex’s chin.
The jedi’s head hung limply, swinging in and out of reality.
A sense of dread plummeted through Rex, rapidly assessing every single possible outcome and options available to him and the broken jedi in his hold.
His thoughts crawled to a halt as a new sense occupied his crowded mind.
The internal monologue trailed off, forgetting what he was evaluating in the first place.
Infuriatingly for Rex, the scent disorientated him for longer than he wanted it to, if at all.
Rex couldn't quite put a finger on it. Worst of all, he noticed.
He wasn't supposed to.
But it was metallic from the blood occupying his hair, his face, his teeth, he could almost imagine walking into an abandoned house with cedarwood and dust floating in the air.
With a bottle of rum discarded on the table, and ink wetting flimsy amongst the table as you smoked a cigarette.
Rex wanted to smoke a cigarette.
But his general was tiptoeing around death in the middle of a battlefield so… maybe later. Giving up was not in Rex’s foresight.
Reestablishing a secure grip on the limp general, Rex gritted his teeth and bent down to plead in Anakin’s ear “ I need you with me”
His desperate prayer seemed to work as Anakin’s body slightly lifted off the captain's body. Even though the slight improvement occurred, they were still traveling dangerously slow.
Every sense Rex was experiencing was at its highest sensitivity which led him to whip out his blaster at an astonishing speed towards the shape approaching behind him.
Drawing a shaky breath in, Captain Rex braced for the incoming fight.
“Hold your fire, it's me Captain, it's Kix!”
Relief washed over him, letting his blaster fall to his side. Kix quickly got to work, scanning over the general to assess his worsening condition.
“Will he make it to the rally point?” Rex huffed as Kix took the general from Rex's hold and laid him against a rotting tree stump.
“His BP is starting to crash..” his sentence cut off as he injected meds into the general's arm.
“He has internal bleeding, probably from the fractured ribs likely puncturing a blood vessel”
Anakin was in an utter state. A face etched in pain as he clutched an arm around his ribs, wincing as he did so.
“We can't risk losing him, if he passes before we get to the rallypoint we’ll be pinned down” Rex barked.
As Kix applied a bacta pad across the jedis ribcage, Rex was relieved to note the gradual return of a steady rising and falling chest.
“I’ve done the best I can, Captain. It's our best shot”
Not wasting any time, Captain Rex offered Anakin into his embrace as he stood to his feet.
Over the course of Kix's aid, Anakin became more responsive. Even managing a laugh which astounded Rex.
But he still needed the support, the occasional gloved hand pressed gently to his chest to steady him.
Around 100 steps and a few collapses later, they finally reached the rally point.
As they entered the clearing, an array of injured clones, medics and crates stood in front of them.
Any strength Anakin possessed had now left his body as Rex and Kix struggled to get him in the medical tent.
Rex's grasp was steady, his hands pressing against the general's back as he laid him into the cot.
Anakin reveled at the heat radiating off Rex's hold. It was better than any pain meds.
And now it traveled up to his neck, blowing Anakin's pupils wide.
Rex watched.
“I think these meds are starting to kick in” retracting his hand that cupped the back of Anakin's neck, Rex returned his gaze to Kix.
Who eventually met his captain's gaze as he ordered an immediate evac for the general, lowering his commlink as he gave Rex his attention.
“That's your sign, sir”
Picking his bucket off the floor and giving his brother a firm forearm clasp, Rex slammed the helmet onto his head and ran.
he says i'm pretty wearing his clothes
