The Hunger Games play on the screen as a redhaired girl named Annie Cresta screams and cries. The camera zooms in on her face and the announcers babble on about how she’s likely next. Tactus spreads his legs on the pool chair and shrugs his shoulders. An Avox delivers him an orange drink with sugar on its rim, a little plastic umbrella swishing between crushed ice.

Tactus thinks the drink in his hand reminds him of his girl. Or maybe the other way around. It doesn’t really matter. The drink is worth more than her, in the end. Tastes better too, he thinks. She probably tastes like salt and fish and smells of dirt.

The venom in the victor’s voice disarms him, and though Tactus is tall, his height does not match the boy who has built glory on death. Fear grips him until Finnick’s mouth finds his, lips bruising, and then? Tactus shoves him B A C K. He looks wild, panicked, distressed, until the realization of his panic washes over him and shame sinks in. Then anger. He’s been fooled -- or taken for one, if only for a single moment.He laughs.“Telling me to be quiet? Now that’s more like it, beast.” Tactus huffs, before stepping forward and resuming the kiss.
