Ok but you know in one of the reverse novels where the earl brings back this kid and road playfully asks if he's going to eat him, then ask if SHE can eat him? SHE WAS BEING DEAD SERIOUS OMFG HE ACTUALLY EATS PEOPLE AND APPARENTLY LITTLE KIDS AREN'T OFF THE MENU AND ROAD PROBABLY EATS HUMAN FLESH HELP ME
Okay so you guys all know how just after the Krory's Castle arc, Lavi was speaking to Komui about how he was able to see Eliade's soul because of Allen's eye getting more powerful? And of course he talked about the sight of the Akuma soul being so horrible that he couldn't eat or hold down food for a week afterwards?
For some reason, this kind of sat weird with me. Lavi's an heir to Bookman and he's been through 48 wars so far, and bitter about his experiences or not, he was more or less used to seeing horrible things by the time he took up the alias "Lavi". It felt weird to me that just seeing the Akuma soul in and of itself would shake him up that badly, especially since he knew already how Akuma were created.
But if you've read any of the Reverse novels, that context actually does kind of make it make sense (or even if you haven't, Lavi mentions in canon to Allen that he recently lost a friend to becoming an Akuma).
Right before Lavi went to Miranda's town and met Allen for the first time was when Doug, one of the Finders who he'd become friends with, had become an Akuma without any kind of warning that it was going to happen(they had just been on a mission together after all). And it was stated outright that the two of them had some history and established friendship there.
I don't think it was so much just that he saw what an Akuma's soul actually looks like that rattled him so badly. I think it was seeing that right after one of his friends became an Akuma and he was forced to essentially kill them, and realizing that that thing is what one of his first real friends willingly turned themselves into when they should have known better.

.....At the end, it turns out Allen's imagination is just running wild as he stares down that lion that cross "saved" him from in the reverse novel. Allen gets mauled to death and Lavi, watching from a distance adds the nameless boy to his records. (Stupid crack dream I had that has some relevance but not really... Seems like it may have sprung from one of those Harry Potter crack end theories)
Finally reading Reverse Novel 3 Chapter 2, and my god I want to cry. Allen's childhood is just so ;n; So many feels. So many.
