The presidentās family lived in the Palace also. Youād almost expect Austin Powers to step out of the games room, so perfect in its 1960s furnishings and colour palette. Private family rooms sit round a modest courtyard featuring the presidentās own āwally dugsā (ceramic dogs). The First Ladyās reception room is pretty.
Reunification Palace hasnāt been used officially for some time, but it was originally both home and office for the president of south Vietnam. Before that, it was the crib of the governor of French Indochina and then of the Norodom kings of Cambodia and then, briefly in 1945, the Japanese colonial headquarters. Thereās been a palace on site since 1863 so several rebuilds have taken place. The palace was then bombed in 1962 by the countryās own airforce in a (failed) attempt to assassinate the unpopular President Diem.
Diem ordered a complete rebuild, and a Paris-trained Vietnamese architect is responsible for the current building. Diem was assassinated before it was complete.
During the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975, tanks of the North Vietnamese Army crashed through the gates and the south surrendered, ending the Vietnam War.
The palace is a lovely work of 1960s architecture and the formal rooms are gorgeously decorated and furnished.
