PSA for the Shameless fandom, and others who write about characters who are incarcerated: language has shifted in recent years. “Felon,” “convict,” “Ex-con,” “inmate” and other words that dehumanize and/or reduce people to their crimes should not be used. “Incarcerated people” and “formerly incarcerated people” are preferred. Mickey is a man who has been incarcerated; he is not an inmate, felon or ex-con. Another emergent phrase that cities and advocates are using for people released from prison and coming home is “returning citizens.”
Would love to see this language included in our Shameless fandom.
