I saw someone send you an ask and it started this sort of fandom discussion on the topic so here's another one! What do you think about Beckett growing out her hair throughout the seasons? I've seen opinions that she cut it short to be taken more serious, appear professional etc. but then Castle shows up and she immediately grows it out :3 I'm not sure how I feel about that idea and I'm genuinely curious what are your thoughts? And the fandoms??
Short version: I think her hair had everything to do with her confidence in the workplace and very little absolutely, positively nothing to do with Castle.
Fact: short hair was the ‘in thing’ in 2008/2009.
Also fact: Beckett is a fashionable woman.
Also, also fact: Being a woman in a male dominated field is hard.
I do feel like her professionalism and/or wanting to be taken seriously in a field overcrowded by men is what kept her from the sleek/‘sexy’ precision bob thing that everyone seemed to rock.
The show edged on how she had to work harder to be taken seriously being a young woman, but they never really dive in too far with that so we can only assume. But I really don’t feel that that assumption is a huge leap to take, given some of the cops we ‘meet’ on the show and some of the interactions we see.
As the seasons go on she embraces the femininity that she seemed to be holding back before; as seen by the growing out of her hair, the styling of her clothes and the make up she wears. I think that is more to do with the changing trends and her confidence growing, rather than it being directly related to Castle.
However, I think he definitely helped with her confidence! This man acts as if she’s some action hero x goddess… why wouldn’t that boost your confidence?
We see her ‘peak’ in season 8. The dresses and skirts come out (although, still a rare treat) once she’s captain because she’s finally ‘made it’. She doesn’t have to prove anything anymore. She doesn’t have to ‘blend’ or be ‘one of the guys’.
